I guess he is a realist, he knows piracy in that region and elsewhere will never be eradicated as long as there are poor people without perspective. It would be just as foolish for him to say he will eradicate drug abuse in the US. So yes, I guess he wants to keep piracy at bay, that should be enough.

Because a Newspaper chooses its words in a way that gives President Obama breathing room, or simply because they slant the news a certain way, (as anyone who reports the news does anyways), why condem the President over something he cant control? If some one was to report that I did something, be it, that I actually did it or not, they would come after me for something that a silly reporter either misquoted, misstated, or even fabricated and all the hate and discontent would be for nothing!

I wouldnt rely on just one newspaper, or news channel to get my news from.

President Obama will only do what he can, as well as those who control shipping in that part of the World. Its the Shipping owners fault that they dont want to arm thier people, (too much insurance problems if they hurt themselves or get hurt by the pirates, while protecting thier ships--->much easier to pay the ransom, and spare the lives of the crew..and they can always pass on the ransom to us, the populace who pay for the good and the price of doing business).

In my opinion, each Country should post guards on the ships that have to pass Somalia and that should stop the pirates.

How do they get on board? Grappling hooks with ropes... They simply toss them up and over, snag onto something and then climb up the rope and they are there.

Those ships are very long, and those boats are very tiny, so they are easy to miss...(the reason why our big naval vessels often run over the small boats in different ports that go unreported in the news, but, is known and talked about, aboard every ship that takes part in an operation). The pirates can just come along and bobble long enough to toss that hook up and shimmy up the rope and then help thier mates up and then you have an entire ship "infested" with pirates-->(at least as many that are on the trail of this or that ship). Those crew members have thier duties to attend to, and they cant always watch overboard....also, like that crew said, they have been ducking the attacks of the pirates for over a week...given a week, you can eventually get done what ever it is that you intend to do!

Just my opinion.

May the LORD Bless each of you.

I wish you well...

Jesse

Wait for the government to do something? I hope we aren't holding our breaths...
If it was me who owned a shipping company, I wouldn't wait for the government to do something, because likely we'd be waiting for a LOOOOOOONG time. Instead, I'd hire about a half-dozen armed mercenaries (like Blackstone) to guard each of my ships. Banks hire armed guards, so why not ships? Tell them "your job is to protect this ship, if fired upon, shoot back, do not allow ANY pirate to board this ship...if you are captured, you are on your own...".
That may sound like drastic measures (and it is), but there is nothing wrong with protecting yourself, and something must be done. Sure, hiring guards would likely be expensive, but would you rather pay millions in ransom? (not to mention the risk of lost lives, and delays in shipping)

Bud

these companies operating these boats just don't learn....they'd rather pay high ransoms occasionally, then just spend a few thousand to arm the crew and deal with the problem...

and the newscasters reporting what they call "facts" are just insane...the other day on the news i heard..."it is hard to tell who is a pirate or not, and stopping it would be hard"...

??? nobody has a right to board your ship using grappling hooks while moving at sea....Anyone doing that is trying to hijack you, what is so hard to understand??? when someone does that YOU OPEN FIRE ON THEM!!!

When i cruise the carribean i am more well armed than apparently ANY ship off the coast of somalia...
