I left Milan more than 10 years ago, I've never looked back and since then I've done more business with Italian companies than I ever did inside Italy.
If minniemouse responds, he will tell you that the economy has stagnated since the early 1990s, there is hardly any new investment to the city's infrastructure, since the introduction of the euro most people barely make ends meet, good jobs are not plentiful, and, finally, that the milanesi puri are a dying breed.
That's why I suggested you may also try small towns if you can find a job: you will likewise struggle to make ends meet, but at least the quality of life would be a bit better.
On top of top of that, without family ties, in either case after a while utter boredom will set it.
You're best bet is to re-acquaint yourselves with your wife's family: Syracuse, a university town, is a train ride away, Catania and Messina, also university towns with some industry, are up the eastern coast, maybe you can find a job teaching Spanish.
Milan is freezing cold in the winter, in Sicily the winters are much milder.
Good luck!

As a grandpaent I understand your concerns and I would like to make a suggestion. I've traveled extensively in the US, Canada and Mexico. I lved in Florida. I keep returning to the same city in mid-America. Not because I lived there for many years but because what it offers children. REgardlss of what Wikipdia or even the Federal Bureau of Statistics say -- they don't live there and never did. And neither do n most of the naysayers. K0st 0f these good folks couldn't find it with a state map that didn't have names on it. Humans across the globe have the same types of life problems. How you handle your problems at home and raise your children is what makes the difference. It isn't Snoop Dogg. Turn it off. It's called parental control. You cannot stop kis from being kids, but you can stop what you do not want in your house. If you really inteested I can tell you home school is 200 times better than any public shcool in the world becaue of the way it is structured and daily learning opportunitys publc schooled children never experience.
The cith I have in mind is 100k. It is very diverse in culture, religion and politics. Religion is very dirverse from Greek Orthox to ANE, to Fereralist to Unitarian and every major US church is also represented. It is the only small city in the midwest that I know of that has a GReek Orthodox Church. There are Italian and Spanish speaking communities as well as other languages. Housing is affordable and there are job opportunites for professionals. It has a lorge park system. One of the opportunities the park offers is classes. You can take them or teach them. The teachers set cost and size.. You could easily teach Spanish or ESL. There is also a Monterssori and schools for gifed children. There is upscale shopping and dining if you are intersted as well as four country clubs and several social clubs. You'll find performing arts, summer stock, pro and semj-pro sports, Riverfront Plaza, cruises, daily costal flights, cultural events, family events, seasonal events, and everything in between. The state will give you a provisional teaching licenese - if you need to update the education reqirements for teachers. You'll find scenertly, flora and fauna. There is a top rated zoo and botanica as well as two malls and plenty of outdoor activity all year. What you won't find is oceans, hurricanes, Trader Joee;s, IKea, Disney World or Cosco.
Public schools are a mix. You'll find good and not so good. You'll find universities and colleges, a medical school and three hospitals nearby. And also one of the the largest night time Christmas parades and dispays in America.
There is a Village that borders this city that is a desireable location with a well regarded public school system. It is compfortable and safe. There is a private sailing club as well was a skeet club, hiking and biking trails, GPS Mountain biking club. You will find about every kind of music from Opera and classical to jass and Indie. Whether or not you wil find Miami Latin music I do not know. Nor do I know about the food. But you can find hand rolled cigars.
If you have a buddinf artist, there is a summer art camp. There is also a large regional state fair. Your income should be comparable. Do you like to golf? There is at least seven courses plust an observatory and a music conservatory and several museums.
Before you give up on America visit middle America, Peoria and Peoria Heights, Illinois. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised at what you find as you explore the five counties that comprise the Peoria Metro Araa. The feds call it Metro, but we call it the Heart of Illinois.
Should you decide to venture outside of Miami, I will be glad to mark some partiular areas and things your children might like. Just renenber this area is mich slower paced than what you are accustomed to, and the traffic is not nearly as heavy.
Please excuse the typing. I don't see as well as I once did.

It can be very easy to romantize about moving to another country...Even if you have been there.
The big difference is that when you visit, you know that you are going back home. So whatever issues bother you...You forget about them and only think about the positive.
I have a friend that decided he and his girlfriend were moving to Costa Rica after a couple of visits. Went for a 6 month test run. Came back in 6 weeks. They were now under a much tighter budget...housing was not as nice. Issues about electricity affected them more (food spoiling in Fridge). No longer in with other tourists...

Italian economy has stagnated for like 20 years, although they are happy, I'd say one of the European countries where people enjoy life the most.

One thing that you will miss about the USA is how cheap things are over here. Even when I go to Canada, I don't buy anything because just about anything is cheaper here in the USA. Most Americans do not realize how spoiled we really are We are used to going to the grocery store and getting everything CHEAP, when you go to Europe, everything is so ridiculously expensive! Example: I asked my Mom to buy me a soccer jersey in Germany, she paid $70 euros for it! A month later, I went to a local soccer shop here in Minneapolis and they had the same jersey for 30 dollars! I think if you moved to another city here in the US, you would be much happier than moving to Italy. Miami is definitely not the greatest city, too many people who don't even speak English and it is almost like living in a Third World country, I would recommend a city like Minneapolis, Seattle or Portland. The weather in these cities is not good but overall, they are much more civilized than Miami

This is true of all the "Sun Belt" cities. People who moved there were willing to accept lower living standards just to say they didn't have to shovel snow. Not much of a trade, I'd say. There's lots better places to live in the U.S.
