Oktoberfest Munich
Will probably be in Munich during this year's Oktoberfest.
Is this worth going to or is it overrated? What exactly takes place?

depends on your expectations, like everything these days.
if it's going to be your first time, you won't know the difference anyway.
the organizers have made great efforts over the past decade or so to attract kind of a jet set crowd to the beer tents with stepped up entertainment and trendy fashions, so the televised events would easily match any other anywhere on the globe.
is it overrated? imho no. business people from everywhere do meet there, like always.
Munich's Oktoberfest History Page
enjoy your visit, anyway.

Is that all you are there going for ?
If yes, an expensive trip just to get a beer, oder ?
or is it overrated?
Depends on what you read or who you are talking to.
We lived there (50 km away) a long time.
Went once, after two years living there.
Once was enough, twice is once too often.
What exactly takes place?
Uhmmm ...
Actually a lot, if you like beer .....
Even if you do not, it is kind of fun to go and see,
how people of other areas seem to loosen up.
We took an American friend there and she even
got on the table to sing and clap.
Geesj, she would have never done that at home ....
After that, we just gave directions on how to get there to other visitors.
Where we lived for so long (I almost can call myself a *Miesbacher Lizenz Bayer*),
we found that the local *Volksfest* was just as good, without the traffic jams.
Just a wee bit smaller, but everybody around us, knew us ....
Just walk around, wave to everybody, say *Gruss Gott*,
knock on a table and sit down.
Dang .... I miss that ....
Oh ... *What takes EXACTLY place .... ?*
Who knows ....
In a nutshell, drinking beer, drinking beer, drinking beer ...
Lots of Local music.
Oh, and a bunch of rides, OK if you like rides ....
Then a lot of food stands, actually quite good !!!
You've got to get a grilled chicken with your beer,
Do not miss that later in the day.
Earlier, before noon, have a Weisswurst with all the trimmings.
LBNL, if you are only versed in High German, forget communicating.
Urbayerisch is very hard to understand .....
I am sure Effie understands ...
