Capital city : Vienna /Wien
-Wien hotspots : the Prater, Stephansdom, Schönnbrunn, Horse School, the Waltz of Debutantes, seat of the opep organization (oil prodicing countries)
Other main cities : Salzburg (home of Mozat, at the feet of the Bavarian Alps), Linz, capital of Niederösterreich, Graz (Kärnten), Klagenfurt (Steirmark), Innsbruck (Tirol)

I was only 2 times in Austria, once, a day in Füssen , another time I visited Wien for a w-e.

I know that some people get Austria and Australia mixed up.
Bush confuses Austria and Australia in latest gaffe | Mail Online
I know that the greatest musical in the world is based on the real life story of the Austrian Von Trapp family.
I know the oldest of the current ballroom dances, The Viennese Waltz, originated in Austria.
I know that two of my favorite foods wiener schnitzel and apple strudel are from Austria.
I probably know more stuff but it escapes me for now.

Any educated Westerner should be familiar with its basic location (Germany north, Czech/Hungary east, Italy south, Switz. west), ethnic makeup (Germanic), language (German), and so on. Non-NATO, non-aligned, Alps west, plains east; Wien/Vienna is an exceptional cultural center. How could they not know these basics? With the exception of 1938-1945, Austria has been independent since the Hapsburgs became fully hapless.
I'm betting a lot of Americans don't even know they've been at war with Austria twice in one century, though in fairness, in both cases Austria was part of a larger country rather than acting independently as just Austria.

My husband is from Oberoesterreich - Linz. His family is from the Muhlviertel. I visit Austria frequently. Beautiful country.
I know that although Austrians speak German, it's really "some kind of German - dialect" not like what is spoken as standard in Germany. I know that there are many many dialects in Austria and that people from different regions may have difficulty understanding each other because of the difference in dialect.
I also know that the stores (Spar) close much too early than I am used to. We have 24 hour grocery stores in Los Angeles.

What you should know about Austria is...
It's in middle Europe, belongs to the german culture but most Austrians don't like the Germans.
The Alps are very important so Austria is the most succesfull skiing nation in the world but the most popular sport is Soccer.
The Capital is Vienna an important cultural center
Maybe the cities Linz, Graz and Salzburg (where Mozart was born).
There live around 8 million people, most near the Danube.
Since 1804 it has been ruled by the Habsburger, After WWI it became independent till 1938 it became part of the "Deutsches Reich" from Hitler.
Most famous persons are Mozart, Sigmund Freud, Gustav Klimt, Falco, Gustav Klimt, (in America) Thomas Vanek, Ferdinand Porsche, Josef Haydn, Johannn Strauß and sadly also Adolf Hitler.
that was what just came to my mind.

I'm in America, and the most famous Austrian I would have to say right now is my State's Governor and former action hero star/Mr. Universe/terminator Arnold Schwartzenegger. He actually played Hungarian Miklos Hargitay in the Jane Mansfield bioflick, very early in his career, who was also a Mr. Universe and of course famously married to Jane. Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order SVU is their daughter.

Austria, to say the least, has a fascinating history. I would have loved to live in early 20th Century Hapsburg Austria. What a time.
