The jerk who married the ex wife actually went to the lengths of trying to have the biological father's name on the boy's birth certificate replaced with his own. How sick is that?

That is called the Brazilian jeitinho.

I know a lot about this story, as it has been widely covered by the media here in the US for several years. It is a saga of epic proportions and could easily be turned into a four-hour mini-series. It probably will be, when either the dad finally gets his son back, or ends up giving up the fight.
If you want to learn more, feel free to google Goldman. Better yet, here's a recent article:
Seattle Eastside Parenting Examiners: Brazilian judge suspends lower court ruling to return son to David Goldman
Of note - read the comment by naynay. Actually, read them all if you have time.
This is just outrageous - the child was kidnapped by his mother five years ago, and she isn't even alive any more. Sick, I tell you, SICK!

I get my information from NBC in America, which has interviewed the father, thoroughly investigated the facts, and traveled with him to Brazil on several occasions.
What additional information would any thinking person possibly need in order to justify the adoption of a child by a foreign total stranger without the consent of his biological father?
Google The Today Show, or MSNBC and get the scoop for yourself.
If the Brazilian court is this corrupt, why would you think their news would be any better?

Brazil is a nation of 190 million; I'm sure most people there are worried about matters beyond an international custody dispute.

As should be most of 300 million Americans, who have far more pressing social issues that hit very close to home: economy, jobs, our ongoing social debates over guns/abortions/gay marriage/role of government/bailouts/etc. I'm betting that several young people died in gang violence today in America's inner cities, and none of them seem to be very monumental in importance, yet a death is a lot more important than arguing over a family court matter.

I agree that what the guy did is totally sick, but I passing judgement over an entire country for that seems a bit too much for me. In that case imagine how many americans should be ashamed over what was done during the Bush's era, torture, war, etc. The truth is that unless you are rich and powerful we don't have much control over our countries.
I also have to say that I don't have much faith in American media, you talk like if Brazil is the corruption haven and the USA is 100% corruption free but that's not so. Because of that I checked both Brazilian and American Media and I found these comments from readers of a Brazilian newspaper.

Translation: David has the right of being with his son that was abducted! Bruna's family is causing a terrible damage to the kid that one day will realize this.
In spite of the diffamation that they want to do on David he is the real father of Sean! it's his right of father which is sacred and legal!

ACORDA BRASIL !

Translation: David deserves the custody of his child and has been bravely fighting against the brazilian injustice. it's shameful that the judicial system, does't do anything to make sean return with his biological father, I'm really scared how Brazilian media has been masquerading the real history, WAKE UP BRAZIL!
So at least in my opinion, we don't really know well what is behind all what we read in the newspapers, and as you can see a lot of people in Brazil are against what's happening to, so at least imho the only ones who should be ashamed are the ones who are doing wrong. but tell me which country is perfect or free from corrutpion, or has a perfect government system that can't be manipulated, and please don't tell me that America is like that because we all know that every country and every government has corruption, injustices and abuses, some more than others though.

If so, it is nice to hear that the poor man has some support from the people of Brazil. If this is the way the Brazilian courts work, one could, no doubt, get a line around the block of citizens who have been screwed over by it too.

Well obviously the courts in Brazil could improve a lot compared to the American standards, but you can't say that this doesn't happen in America, the rich and powerful mock the law and wipe their butts with it,
