I dithered a bit about which airport to vote for in this poll. The recent crappy airport experiences for me were Frankfurt, LAX and Sydney. I weighed the various levels of crappiness and Frankfurt came out on top in 1st place, Sydney in 2nd, LAX in 3rd.
I expected much more from Germany. No place to sit. The few seats they had were all taken and the only place to sit and have a coffee or something to drink was in a cocoon of cigarette smoke ... wtf? We sat in a departure area since there was no place else, and got kicked out near departure time, so we went to another one. And got kicked out of that after about half an hour. Ridiculous. It was also just very dated.
Just went through LAX last week and it was pretty bad too but mainly because of the construction going on there. It caused quite a bit of chaos in such a typically crowded and busy airport. The concessions beyond security were inadequate too. And yes, the staff there need to take a course on customer relations or just a plain How To Be Friendly basic workshop. Very atypical attitudes for the US. After spending 3 weeks in the US and encountering friendly helpfulness everywhere, LAX was a big letdown.
Sydney was a nightmare. I've always hated their stupid setup for transferring from International to Domestic. We arrived on one of those new big Airbus planes along with another jumbo jet around the same time and it was chaos. Customs officials just gave up and stamped our Declaration cards with the green stamp and told us to head out to the Exit without us having our stuff checked by Quarantine. Suit yourselves.
