Compare these:
Tromsų in northern Norway:
Location: 69°40′58″N
Normal Winter Temps
January average high: −1.6 °C (29 °F).
Lowest recorded low: −18.4 °C (−1 °F)
Nome, Alaska, USA:
Location: 64°30′14″N (actually farther south than Tromsų)
Normal Winter Temps
January average high: -10 °C (14 °F).
Lowest recorded low: -47.7 °C (-54 °F).
As you can see, it’s way colder in Nome than in Tromsų, even though Tromsų is north of Nome.

Or even better:
Oymyakon, Republic Sakha, Russia
Location: 63°15'N
Average January high: -41°C (-41°F)
Average January low: -49°C (-57°F)
Lowest recorded temperature (official): -65°C (-86°F)

I guess winters in Oslo could be roughly compared to Toronto. Bergen is similar to coastal British Columbia. One should also take into consideration that winter days in Norway are pretty short (if any).

They are shorter than during the summer, yeah.. But there is definitely hours of daylight each day even during the winters!
But to make up for it, the summerdays pretty much never end. In northern Norway, you can be outside and paint your house a 4 in the morning! In the southern part, we get maybe 2-3 hours of darkness, if that (If you ever come here during the summer, I swear you will hate birds by the end of your trip. they never shut up, even during the night).
BTW tromsų is very far north. not many people live that far north.. Most people live in Trondheim and below, if you get what I mean. Personally, I“ve never been further north than Trondheim, and I don“t really intend to, either.

To City Of Rain : well, your chart shows however that Paris is way warmer on average than Oslo, with an average high of -2°C in Oslo vs. 7°C in Paris in January, and an average high of 20°C in Oslo vs. 25°C in Paris in August!

yeah, im aware of that.
its just, most people would think that oslo was -50 C, so i just wanted to make it clear that it's just like any other EU city, really.
obviously paris is going to be warmer - its way further south.

I live in northern Germany, and at this time of the year, it's already pretty bright at 4am that you could also paint your house.

I think a lot of Norwegians haven't further north than Trondheim. I've been to Nordland, Troms and Finnmark many times. Beautiful nature but that is pretty much it. I would definitely not live there.

but why would you not live there? Is it the people? The light/darkness? I'm really curious because I'd love to go to Finnmark, Nordland and Troms.
