...not posh, but no low wage either, solidly middle class, and a small town, so a no-no for our friend unforunately (funny thing, one woman in the City Council is of US origin).

I'd say a sincere "no". When you say "minimum wage" do you mean where you presently live or the equivalent amount of the French SMIC?....either way, Paris is too expensive for minimum wage earners. I presume you have a job offer with health coverage provided for, otherwise health coverage alone will consume a large percentage of your income. I'd try to renegotiate the salary and company benefits. I'd be very wary of accepting a job, especially as an expat, that doesn't provide a reasonable level of income. Living on minimum wages anywhere in France would be difficult if not impossible for an expat, even in shared accommodation. If you're going it alone on a long-stay visitor visa, there's an income level required before the visa will be granted.
