I visited Slowenia and Croatia - beautiful landscape, quiet and not over- modernized towns (I would say you can taste their still a little bit, how the "old europe" could have looked like), central european and slavic culture in the mainland, mediterrean culture along the coast.
But many nationalists

Nazi comparison would be exaggerated. Bombing campaign to end the conflict – that is the similarity.

Croatian fighting for freedom succeeded not because of the western support but because the people of Croatia wanted to get rid of Yugoslavia and communism, that's how we won the war. Yes, we have been supported by Germany, Austria, Vatican and some others - these have our thankfulness for good. Franjo Tuđman led this country to independence, I’m aware he is hated for that by many - but not by me for sure.

I was in Croatia and Bosnia in June 1985. Stayed with my fathers brothers on Pozega....Saw a lot sights that were eventually destroyed in the Balkan wars. Visited the birthplace of my father in Kamenu near Blagaj. Stari Most bridge in Mostar was and is once again a gem, the clear cold water and the man who dove off that bridge for money from the tourists!!!. The Catholic Cardinal of Sarajevo is a relative of mine.
Great place, Croatia.

My great regret is that Croatian and Serbs, who formed the backbone of former Yougoslavia and share a common language, and are both Christians, could not get along, the result is an independent Bosnia with increasing Moslem fundamentalist influence, and a thug governed "independent" Kosovo.

I was in Dubrovnik and the island of Lopud in Croatia last year. Dubrovnik was beautiful, no sign of the war as far as I can see and basically has all the tourism infrastructure needed for western tourists.
