Solar eclipse in Asia
Anyone in the Asia area see the solar eclipse today? Here in the Tokyo area, it was cloudy and only a 75% eclipse, so it looked just like a regular gloomy day. Although the sun was peaking through the clouds a little bit, you couldn't tell it was an eclipse. It was bright though. Shanghai would have been a good place to be, as they were showing live coverage on Japanese TV, and it was dark as night at 11 a.m. (Japan time, not sure which time zone Shanghai is in).

Yeah, here in Shanghai it was a total eclipse which was a very interesting experience. It steadily got darker for maybe 20 minutes but became as dark as night in a few seconds. Of course there was a thick cloud cover and rain so I didn't actually get to see the sun being blocked.
Some friends and I snuck to the top of our apartment building so it was a special experience clear skies or not.

Weather was perfect here in Taipei. Went to the zoo where they were having a little event and got to see it through a telescope. Nice. Would've been nicer if the full eclipse had passed over Taiwan.

We had bright clear skies in the Philippines for the first time in months. The eclipse was only a partial, but it was "an event." Staff all seemed to have xrays at their desks and took them outside to view the eclipse, which looked like a photo with a finger in front of the bottom of the lens. I saw it through an xray of someone's spine, which was as memorable as the eclipse.
I shall not await responses that xrays aren't adequate protection and informing me that we've all harmed our retinas...
