In 2003, he received the Award for Contributions to the Development of Jewish Life in Russia from the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia. He published for the New York newspaper.
Surprise, surprise!
So the Jewish New York connection guy won the million dollars from EU to fight the xenophobia and racism. Do I need to continue? How credible is such source? Come on guys, you are not even trying. He is even suing Mel Gibson for his movie... Maybe he counted Mel Gibson towards russian neo-nazis?
I don't believe 50k neo-nazi count from this guy. Maybe 15k in real... which make it what 0.01% of population? Indeed rampart and widespread.
I am not saying there is no racism and xenophoby problem in russia. There is. But it's nothing even remotely close to how you are trying it to paint it.

Some Russian bashers anyway will never change :
- when it was the Czar in power, they were saying that Russians were backwards and that they needed a revolution
- when the revolution happened, some capitalists like Armand Hammer helped consolidate the totalitarian Bolshewist power; instead of supporting the Democratic moderate forces in 1917, the US evacuated Kerensky in the US embassy (Kerensky died, old and bitter, in NYC circa 1970).
- Then there was the Cold War, so of course Russia was the Evil Empire(although Josef Djougatchvili Stalin was...Georgian!)
- When the Soviet Union disappeared thanks to...the Russian Gorbatchev, still it was not enough for Russian bashers and they put alcoholic Yeltsin in power, who sold out his country to Oligarchs like Berezowky
- and finally when Wladimir Putin tried to reestablish some order and rule of law in the country and stop the chechen fanatics , they were calls of "fascism", "Russia going back to its own devilish ways", "KGB rule" (although KGB didn't exist anymore), etc.
Some people will never learn!

why can't Russia be like other countries like Germany, Spain, even Brazil ? they think normal leaders sell out the country and so many people believe that racism gets worse, people end up supporting the kgb.
next thing you know 80 % of the Jewish population is forced out (this has happened over the last decade) and most ethnic people avoid going out after dark. the main reason the problem of racism is out of control is because the police and government are indifferent to it.
does the Russian government reflect the multiculturalistic population they represent ?

If it doesn't get reported....it never happened.
Some countries are a little less rigorous about things than others.
It's also dangerous to report on things in the Russian media.

This isn't Russian bashing...it is well documented that life in Russia has been exceedingly tough and brutal over the past century (and more). The purges, the civil war, the German invasion, Stalin.....I truly pity the Russian people and admire their toughness at the same time.
For perspective...look at the enormous outcry over Guantanamo compared to the chechen situation...the Russians aren't the only ones getting bashed.
Putin is in a tough position and has had to be ruthless, of course he will be 2nd guessed by people who don't have a clue about how lawless that area is. (Not debating his actions just explaining that its very very dicey in parts of eastern europe.)
With tough times in Russia or ANY OTHER COUNTRY there will be xenophobia, nationalism, racism...just people looking to vent thier frustrations. It happens everywhere.
It's also undeniable that E. Europe has some very very bad ethnic blood over the slaughters of the past centuries and history is always threatening to repeat.

I still want to visit Russia for the beauty that is there, but the higher incidence of hate crimes scares me. I know that statistics aren't everything and that a person needs to ask WHY such things happen. I can't just accept it as is. It still freaks me out. I just hope to get over my fears. I am a black person from the USA and hearing what happened and hearing that race might have played a factor makes me question my own safety.

Im not trying to paint it in any way, I have seen the recent murders of foreigners on the news myself. Your only defense is that, that guy is a jew or has jewish connections.
