Flights to Africa?
From Chicago... what would be the cheapest African city to fly too?
I would like to fly to either ...Cape Town, Johannesburg, or Nairobi
Any thoughts?

Yup.
Go to a couple of online travel sites like Expedia or travelocity, punch in yur travel dates for the 2 destinations and see what kind of prices come up for the various available airlines.

I'm from North africa and fly to africa all the time. The cheapest fly is tough for an american to find mainly because flight prices depend on the heavy traffic on a route. Many americans go to mexico so to flights there are cheap. Few americans go to africa so direct flights are costly. Your best bet is to try to get a flight to England and then a same day flight to cape town or nairobi if there are direct flights. I take flights to france-cheap for an american -then to Algeria because many french go there and there is a big algerian community in france. England has the biggest southafrican and kenyan community of any place outside africa so it will have the cheapest flights

Does anyone know anything about overland African tours... I am looking for something between 21 day and 42 days. They seem pretty cheap... but are there hidden costs?

I know that South African Airways & Delta have direct flights from NYC-JFK to Johannesburg. Perhaps you could get a connection from Chicago.
