A lot of people diss Carcassonne for that reason, but I respect the French for preserving the place (and all the chateaux) instead of just letting it fall apart.
I walked through the old Cité at 8 o'clock on a freezing February morning with
nobody else around, and it was literally and figuratively a cool experience.
Some people go on specialized Cathar tours (or do their own).
I am really not into Cathar authenticity oneupsmanship--I just like castles.
We spent one night in 15th century
Borthwick Castle outside of Edinburgh; it was very atmospheric, I could definitely imagine Mary Queen of Scots holed up there.
