Default Opinion please! Which do you like better? Costa Rica or Dominican Republic?

Hi, I am looking for some opinions here. I don't know a lot about either area (Costa Rica and Dominica Republic) and am looking for expert opinions.

Which do you like better? Why? Which is nicer? Safer? More friendly to Americans? Better weather (less hurricanes) etc.

Any opinions, info or websites, etc. will be greatly appreciated.

Also, how hard it is for an American to relocate to these areas? For now I would like to find a vacation home but when it is time to retire, I'd like to be able to relocate without having problems.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've never been 2 The Domincan Republic, but I would still think of Costa Rica as being safer, not neccessarily nicer. When it comes to safety in Latin America Costa Rica sets the bar.

Costa Rica by far, aside from some occasional problems in the Nicaraguan border area it is one of the most stable and peaceful nations in the region. The government and the police are shockingly professional by all accounts.

I always felt very very safe in Costa Rica. I wandered around small villages in the middle of the rain forest and the people were very nice. I only saw police in San Jose and they didn't seem to give anybody problems. In most places, I never even saw a police presence.

Thanks! Does anyone know how hard it is for an American to relocate to that area?

Also, what "critters" are in Costa Rica that I should be aware of? I'm a freak about spiders and snakes but other things don't really bother me. I just don't want to wake up in bed and have a snake licking my eyebrows. LOL

Thanks

I've been all over Dominican Republic and didn't have any issues with safety.

I've been in both and each seemed pretty safe. I liked that fact that Costa Rica has a central highland region with a cool climate. DR seemed much hotter. CR also has a more diverse landscape/nature (it is a known ecotourism hotspot).

You'd probably be able to work as an English teacher in either place.

JAH703 is on a distinguished road
I've been to the Dominican Republic many times and have had no problems....but my father is from there, so that's most likely why :P

If you have someone with you that knows how the place works and how to get around then you are much less likely to have problems.

I should also point out that it will be MUCH harder for you to understand Dominican Spanish than Costa Rican Spanish, as Dominicans tend to speak abnormally fast and cut letters off the end of their words...not to mention all the random slang words they use

On the plus side: beautiful country, great weather, nice beaches, sexy women who love americans
