Working in Italy
I'd like to work in Italy for a while.
(why not)
Wife is a doctor, I'm an IT geek. What is the best way to go about this?

I believe that getting a work permit/visa for European Union countries is quite difficult.

Hi! I live in Italy.
I suggest you to find another place in Europe to work in IT field. IT field in Italy means computer programming and industrial automation.
Without a great curriculum (read: a Master of Science in enginnering and many work experiences in these fields) you're going to earn not more that 25,000 € a year, which is less than 1,300 € a month after taxes... and CoL in Italy is REALLY high... with this salary you won't have enough money to rent an apartment neither to eat.
What do you do exactly?
What type of doctor is your wife? Doctor is still a decent job here... a good doctor could have a 50,000+ € salary and a head physician could earn about 150,000 €. I don't know if a US Doctor could work here, maybe there's a professional exam to take...

I strongly advise you to forget it. Go anywhere else but Italy. Salaries are just ridicolous and if you end up in the business capital (Milan) rent prices are crazy plus the town is not pretty at all.
Btw, I am Italian, leaving abroad.

Tenzo,
If you're looking for the experience of living in Italy without the downside of low wages, consider a civillian US government job. You can check these websites: Careers for embassy and foreign service jobs, or USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site for the United States Office of Personnel Management website.
Good luck.

If your wife wants to work as a doctor in another country, she may have to pass local medical license exams.
