The simplicity of the design may be "typical Danish" but most Danes don't live in lavish townhouses.

Berlin is known for being one of the cheapest big cities in europe.. its also the poorest capital in all of western europe, as 1/3 of its population live on welfare.
this is the reason why so many germans from outside berlin dislike the capital!

Is also far and away the home of more high culture as well as more vibrant than any city in Germany, or Scandinavia either for that matter.

i wasnt attacking berlin, i was just simply implying that berlin is much cheaper than other european cities, and therefore shouldnt be used as an example.
i have actually been to berlin and i think the city is amazing. just the feel of being there is great and undescirbable, despite the fact that its poor.
i wish scandinavia was as culturous as the US, though..

I would have to agree. When they showed where mom and dad's bedroom was (a bed just to the side of the kitchen sink, against windows with no blinds), all I could think of was, "Um... how did they get enough privacy to make those three kids they have??

berlin might be the capital of germany, which has the biggest economy in all of europe, but the city itself is still poor. the financial centers of germany are frankfurt, munich and hamburg. berlin is mostly known for being a cultural centre.
and no, my statistics are not wrong. about 1/3 of all berliners live on welfare. this is not something ive made up cause i saw a lot of poor people when i was there, its a fact that ive come across several times.

Norway is rather smug and self-satisfied and without North Sea oil would still be a european backwater, but I had no intention of bashing it.
Berlin is a large city, there are many kilometers of wealthy areas where both Oslo and Bergen could be contained, and look modest in comparison.
Welfare in Germany is a complicated matter and posting these figures on an american site is quite misleading as the word has vastly different meanings in the american mentality than the german one.
