Default Which countries/regions are most homophobic?

Particularly in western first world countries, but also on a worldwide scale.

My guess is cities like New York, SF, Paris would be the most tolerant, while gays would have it tougher in countries like Iran and Jamaica.

I'm not gay myself, but such attitudes would no doubt reflect wider prejudices.

To be fair, at least compare generalities about cities to each other, and countries and regions to each other. It's unfair to compare, say, NYC to medium sized country or a whole region.

Well I realised it varied alot within region. But okay, let's keep it to countries and not cities.

One way to look at it would be by laws. I realize this doesn't necessarily capture all of society's behaviors, but its a measure of formal governmental discrimination. Especially if the government has actual enforced laws punishing gay behavior.
Wikipedia is of course, less than ideal as a source, but its a good starting point, and has links at the bottom:
LGBT rights by country or territory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This map seems good:
http://www.ilga.org/map/LGBTI_rights.jpg

As I would expect, within the West: Northern and Western Europe and Canada have the most liberal laws, followed by much of the rest of Europe and Australia, and the US is last. And indeed, the Middle-East and Africa and some of Asia doesn't look so good (although South Africa is a bit of surprise in having liberal laws). Latin America looks better than I thought it might as well.

Latin American culture SEEMS somewhat free when it comes to sex, yet it also seems very traditional, largely because of Catholicism. Like you'll have some people having lots of sex with many partners, and others living chaste lives and only having sex after marriage.

In the developed world it's probably the Arab Gulf states. Among nations that are both developed and Western it would likely be some of the wealthiest nations of the Caribbean. (The poorer ones not being First World) A few of even the wealthiest Caribbean nations maintain laws against homosexuality and have hostile speech about them in mainstream music.

Parts of Middle-Eastern countries & Asia and most of Africa.
Especially Arab/Muslim countries, where punishment will be prison or death in certain countries!

Interesting map. Interesting most of the US is grey.

I know in Saudi Arabia a couple of homosexuals were publicly beheaded with a sword!!!
