I do not count the greatest leader as being one single man but a body of men and they would be the founders of the United States. For one remarkable moment in time, a group of men, brilliant men, had the land, the people, the motivation, and the wisdom to create a new form of government based upon the principles that all men are created equal, free to say what they wish, and worship as they please. An Adams, Washington, Monroe, Madison, Jefferson, or Franklin would have, unto themselves, a treasure to any country, but they existed in one place in time and had the power to change the world. Rather than enrich their own pockets and set themselves as nobles and kings, rather than seek their own glory, they turned away crowns and coronets. This was not done without bloodshed, without missteps, without great loss, but no great leader achieves without sacrifice and failures.
Their gift was to one country that would become made of all countries and the ideals they set forth ignited the world to emulate them and change the course of all histories by forging a benchmark to which, save the older but tiny democracies in the world, all other nations aspire.

Or surely a great inciter. If anyone here speaks German I'd be interested in hearing their take of watching his speeches. To me he just appears mad but maybe in the context of the time and language it came across as inspiring?
I'm not trying to credit him, just fascinated by how history unfolds.

I have to find fault with Gorbachyov as a leader. He was never elected nor did the people rally behind him. Yeltsin had charisma, but did not "lead" toward continuing what he had begun. If he had created a presidential party to push his reforms the problems the west faces with Putin today would quite possibly be a moot point. If Gorbachyov, a man unwilling to committ to economic reforms had slowly begun privitization perhaps Yeltsin would have a different legacy, shock therapy would not of occured, millions would be better off, the 1990's would not of been so disasterous for the average Russian, there would be not war to distract the public in Checnya and on and on.
It's hard to blame him, but it seems as though Gorbachyov was in the best position to do the most good and didn't do it because of his allegience to Soviet doctrine.
I find fault with Martin Luther King too. If he was president and did extraordinary things I think it's likely I would agree. However, he was a religious man leading a social and moral movement. It's my opinion that a man leading such a movement should adhere to the highest moral code. There are reports from his circle of insiders this was not true, whether these, or the FBI reports are true I don't know. But for that reason I find fault with him as well.
I think Ghandi would get my vote as from the 20th century.
Historically speaking my choice would be different. I will exclude Jesus of Nazareth as a non-mortal, because that is what I believe. In his place I submit Peter. He testified before Kings, was a martyr for the cause, dedicated his life to missionary work and "saved" the early church and turned it into the largest religion in the world.
King Leonidas and William Wallace would have to be at the top of men I would follow.
These are just a few examples because obviously I am in no place to nominate the best ever as my knowledge is limited.
There are probably noticable flaws with every person we were to discuss.

1) Whether you believe in Jesus as a biblical figure and the Son of God etc... or not... check your history! Jesus was a "real person" who is referenced in many NON-religious historical texts as a man who helped the less fortunate and tried to make the world a better place.
2) Wow that's rude!
