Most good leaders were killed before they were known. I know of one who was executed when I was a young girl - he led an ill fated coup. I went to school with his kids and he was a family friend.

wasn't he responsible for the annexation of East Timor which resulted in over 100,000 deaths? Not to mention he was ranked as number one most corrupt leader by the ransparency International's Global Corruption Report in 2004.
Best leader is too subjective a question, in my opinion. It's kind of like asking "what was human kind's greatest invention?" There's heaps of excellent examples that come to mind; the wheel, flight, sanitation, penicillin, etc. All have had revolutionary effects so it's difficult to pick one - for example, the wheel modernized transportation but penicillin added about 20 years to the average life span. Also, a lot of people seem to mention modern leaders obviously because they have greater relevance. Meh.

I agree to a certain extent Northsider that Michael Collins was a good leader but, unfortunately some of his men did'nt think so.
He was murdered by anti-treaty IRA gunman Sonny Neil in an ambush.
It's a pity it was'nt the coward Eamon de Valera who died, it is thought he ordered the ambush.

Thank you albion. I would just change your 'good' for 'great'. He alone worked out the British intelligence system here and crippled it. Then, without going into the ins and outs of the War of Independence (some call it the Anglo Irish War) he worked out a treaty with the Welsh Wizard and in doing so came to an understanding with Churchill, who despite himself actually grew to like and respect Michael.
I believe that if Michael had lived this country would be long reunited, and that would (I believe) have been done with the assistance of people like Churchill and others in government who by then were as war weary as we were.
Ergo, our recent 'troubles' would have never have happened.

Just wondering why so many choose to "hate" on anyone's personal response or answer? Quoted above is the OP's request for this thread. He/she does not ask for objections/rantings to anyone's response, just your opinion on the question.

Well, this may sound a bit morbid, but when you think about it, Adolf Hitler was probably the best leader ever. He was such a good speaker and very good at running a country. Sure he didn't have the best beliefs, but that doesn't mean he can't be a good leader...

In terms of Human agency, I would say Confucius for 2000 years his teachings united China and for many of the 2000 years China was the largest and most advanced civilization in the world. Also the exam system and believe in meritocracy his teachings inspired allowed China to be one of the most upwordly mobile societies, in times of peace, for the majority of those 2000 years.
