I just left Sydney and Melbourne last week. Not even close to being more than 20 hr cities. However, one could argue they are two of the best on the planet.

Madrid isn't a "24/7" city. No subway after 2 am, if I remember correctly. I did walk around the city at 3-4 am in the morning. Yes, there are clubs in every major city that are still open. But that doesn't mean it's a 24/7 city. I wouldn't even call NYC that. Every city gets quiet at night. Some people here and there is normal, but then again, when you say 24/7, I expect much more people. Most people sleep at night.

Between 1 am & 5 am there is no subway in Tokyo that doesn't mean it's not a 24/7 city.

As Tiger Beer mentioned, most would consider São Paulo a 24-hour city. The difference with the other cities mentioned here is that it's very car-dependent. I'll be interested to see if they lengthen their mass transit hours once new line expansions come online...from what I've been told it can get a little dangerous on the subway/buses there though.

Las Vegas isn't truly a city, period. haha

Default Picking up this thread - put my vote for Seoul

So far it is the only city I've gone to where you could arguably say that shopping at 2am is better than shopping at 2pm - in other words I'm not going to 7-11 for a packet of mints and an umbrella.

Like many other cities public transport stops at 1am, but that doesn't mean food and shopping does.

There can be a traffic jam at Dongdaemun in the early hours of the morning.

24 hour restaurants in all parts of the city.

I would say that the top 5 are taken out by Asian citites, conceivably NYC could squeeze in there.

Not really in order, Seoul, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo & Bangkok. (Kuala Lumpur would make my top 10, but count out Singapore).

None of the European cities are close, London, Rome, Athens, Madrid or Paris. Amsterdam can be lively, but not every night - I remember walking home at some pretty dead times.

Sydney is the most nocturnal city in Australia and it is not close - forget Melbourne (I live there).

Can't say much about much of North America, I haven't been to many of the cities, put me down for "no" on Toronto and Los Angeles.

I agree, Asian cities are very alive at night. Plus you could throw in South American cities

New York City is not 24 hour city as many people may think, despite its nickname being called "The City that Never Sleeps". Most stores close between 6 - 8 pm except pharmacies and few places around Times Square & China Town being open 24 hours or close very late. Yes, subway runs 24/7, but the city is very quite after 3 AM, and early Sunday mornings

This is not accurate. There are 24/7 restaurants, pharmacies and food stores open throughout NYC's 5 boroughs.

London or Dublin or definatly not 24 hours. All the buses stop after 11. The cities have no reason to be open all night.
