Whatever happened Tuesday. There is very little evidence to suggest that the US is number 1. It has the highest murder rate in the industrialised world - not to mentioned the highest poverty rate.

It's not in the top 5 on a lot of UN surveys such as quality of life, standard of living etc. It's healthcare is ranked in the 40's, infant mortality is lower. Health of it's citizens is in the 70's. Even freedom of the press it's ranked in the 40's.

It's a nice place but I'm sorry the US has to realise it's not 1955 anymore.

Tuesday I have to admit was inspiring. But the world is currently going through a financial meltdown basically because of US consumerism funded by it's irrepsonsible borrowing from the rest of the world. In the last 8 years the USA has been the most irresponsibly run developed nation on earth and has had one of the most vile leaders of any democratic nations in history.

I'm sorry but these claims are a bit hollow. The US may potentially be the greatest country but right now it just aint. The country's bordering on bankruptcy. It's bailing out wall street and it's decrepit motor industry. It can afford to do this but can't afford a decent universal health system for it's citizens. And the worst thing is it's still borrowing off overseas countries to fund their inadequecies. It's like their trying some new form of corporate socialism. Oh year of course there's a war which has also seen a lot of it's young people die not to mention it's strain on the already alarming national debt.

I'm sorry I can't see how the USA is the greatest country on earth at this time.

I'm hoping it can get back to being what it was because I actually really really like the place but if you keep thinking you're the greatest on earth with the current state it's in you never will live up to that potential again. Right now the US is like the incredibly gifted athlete who think it's all just going to happen for him.

this. altho i dont quite share the same like for the country as you.

Some guys mentioned France, Spain, Portugal (!) or Italy.
How ridiculous!
these small minded Latin mavericks.
France gave La Fayette, OK, positive (for the past).
But the others? most young Spanish and Italians dream positively DREAM of going to the USA, who unfortunately rather favors immigration of Latin Americans, Asians, even Sudanese and Somalis -I didn't say Kenyans, did I? (lol)-
Great nations for me are those who have superior civilizations, who brought science arts and modern ideas to light :
-Anglo saxon countries
-Germanic countries
-Slavic countries
-France/Belgium to a certain extent
- Japan

France and belgium ? Belgium a civilization whereas this country is in both part and born one century ago ? frankly sometimes I wonder where you are from...

Who brought science aret and modern ideas to light...

Well by your definition there is so many countries, but I can tell you that by your definition France is certainly the more concerned. If you want to discuss about that, I have plenty of argument who can show you how you're right to say France !

Please could you stop playing the french ? IT's borgin and your ignorance gets annoying.

That makes China 5 times as good as America in terms of population, ten times as good in terms of walks of life, and 100 times as good in terms of diversity of culture. Now would you like to hear about India?

OK, then, how about the Arabs, who kept culture and science going during the Middle Ages, and then re-taught Europeans everything they forgot while the popes were torturing and executing everybody who could think. Not to mention the Iranians (then called Pesians), the Indians, the Chinese. Jeez, the Chinese had to show an Italian how to make spaghetti.
