Provocative is an adjective. It begins with "p". And, it's a synonym of recalcitrant.
Not it?

I know, but it is not the word I am trying to remember. It may not even start with "p." That is just sticking in my mind for some reason. All these words are fitting the meaning, more or less. But the word I am thinking of has more of an elitest air to it. It will probably come to me in the middle of the night. I like provocateur, but the actual word, I'm thinking, is not a derivation of another word, per se.

Nonconformity for the sake of nonconformity is conformity!
A ditto. An echo. A copy of a copy. Dittoism
Don’t deviate just for the sake of deviating. Mindless contrarianism.
An anti-conformist looks at what others are doing and intentionally does the opposite.
Anti-conformity
Renegade..adjective
