My grandma died a long time ago, so it is hard to remember all of the nuances, but I think she really said, "What the devil" as in "What the devil did you do that for?" Not "What in the devil." Subtle difference.

That was a quarter. "4 bits" was 50 cents and "6 bits" 75 cents.
