Me too, Bunky!
This poem I wrote after constantly hearing my husband's grandmother tell me to not get old. I told her many times I'd try not to, but of course, time marches on!
When I was young,
I dreamed of being grown -
of leaving the nest
and making a life of my own.
However, time flew faster
than a bird in flight.
Years lifted their wings and flew out of sight.
Now, my memory is the only thing that lingers,
since generations have slipped through my fingers.
Traces of yesterdays, pieces of the past,
pictures in my mind are the only things that last.
Beauty is gone, now it must always come from within.
My hair has grayed, and there are wrinkles in my skin.
Decades passed my by, and left me feeling jaded.
But, unlike my youth, the beauty of my life hadn't faded.
I can imagine a young woman, a young man at her side,
he her groom, and she his bride,
who enjoyed the blessings life bestowed,
and cultivated the seeds of love the sowed.
If pieces of the past are all that remain-
I'll enjoy each trip down memory lane.
"Don't get old!"
I was always told.
But it isn't so bad, as I've come to see,
if you've cared for and nutured your family tree.
