there a 80 acre piece here in Star Valley , up a small canyon next to the Idaho Line, you might need to gravel a little road and have power move in a mile from the end of the line. The a spring a pond and small creek, the owner need money and is having a fire sale at $3500/acre

If you're wanting to live near a major city- then you'd need to be by Laramie or Cheyenne so you could access Denver Co. No major cities in Wyoming. But in Cheyenne you are not close to the mountains. Wyoming is pretty expensive to live in- I think it would be pretty difficult to find a house and 10 acres of land for 150 grand, but of course I could be wrong. I mean, I have seen places around Lander here for that price with maybe an acre or two, but they are not very nice homes, and less desirable areas. I wish you much luck in your search though!

You are going to have a hard time finding much with any acreage for $150k.On the west side of the bighorns around lovell and powell or greybull and basin you can sometimes find something on a little acreage with a house in that pricerange....but whether it meets your definition of 'nice' is on you. Those areas are much more arid than the east side of the bighorns and good paying jobs ,[or any jobs],much scarcer. There are some places in the more arid areas around riverton and to the southwest around farson with a few acres. From farson you can commute to rock springs for work but you are going to have to drive a little ways to get into any nice mountains, pretty much everyplace you are going to get acreage and a modest home in wyoming for $150k you can count on it being arid and not many peoples idea of 'scenic'.Areas within the state that traditionally have high wages and realitively low unemployment are also some of the least scenic and have the highest cost of realestate. If you dont mind living in the high desert and driving aways to the mountains you have more options. I think you need to figure out where in the state you are likely to find a job with your job skills,(I dont know what they are),and then decide if there is anywhere within a 30-50 mile radius you would be willing to live.

For a couple other suggestions there are some places in your price range with acreage on the fringes to the north, east, and south of the blackhills of south dakota within commuting distance to rapid city.In montana there are sometimes places that might work for you to the north of billings and just south of roundup in the bull mountains. They arent a very big mountain range but it is a nice looking area within commuting distance to billings, the biggest city in montana.goodluck

Just to give you a ball park figure, here's a listing in Buffalo:

Type: Residential Bedrooms: 3 Baths: 2.00 Sq. feet: 1264.00 Acreage: 10.00 Zoning: None $199,000
Country living w/3bedroom, 2 bath home, barn, guest cottage, all on 10 acres with view of the Big Horn mountains. The house is mfg with a nice stick built additon and attached oversized, 2 car garage. Covered porch and large enclosed back porch makes this place ready for easy living.

Here's one for Story:

Type: Residential Bedrooms: 1 Baths: 1.00 Sq. feet: 720.00 Acreage: 1.04 Zoning: AG $199,000
A wonderful weekend cabin with a 240 sq. ft. guest cabin and creek frontage. Very secluded, quiet location in the woods. Large 872 sq. ft. deck. Several outbuildings.

So you can see that $200k doesn't get you a lot.

As far as hunting goes, I live on 3 acres but it's only 4 miles to be in National Forest for hunting. It's only 100ft to fish in the Tongue River of which I just went out today. Rainbow and a brown are for supper.

You know some of the options outside Sheridan. If you look around Casper, near or a bit south of Glen Rock might work. Boxelder Canyon was recently highlighted for me. If you look outside Gillette maybe Moorcroft would be acceptable. Between Laramie and Cheyenne, the areas near Buford and Federal could be worth a look.

Only if you want a place where you can count on being snowed in for awhile each winter ... typically, several weeks, perhaps a couple of times each winter.

This is an incredibly violent weather area, with deep snowfall ... and many huge wind-driven drifts.

The roads aren't so great in the area, either. We've got friends up that way who now have learned to cope with the situation, and count on snowmobiling out to a place close to the interstate where they keep a spare 4x4 pick up truck so they can get to town. Even then, it's not easy to do. We visited them last month and from the Buford exit to their place ... a matter of about 11 miles ... it took about 40 minutes winding our way through all the wash out and messed up roads (due to recent rains).

Closer to the monument up there might work, there's a new subdivision going in. But you're still at risk of I-80 being closed during the winter months as far as getting anywhere from there.

Good information sunsprit. With "near Buford" I was thinking right off the interstate or the exit before to the east. I figured it would escalate fast as you went deeper, as your story indicates, so that was as far I thought to possibly take it. I said "could be worth a look" to get some more places in that area out there for possible discussion and consideration, hoping to pull out some good feedback about how near one could get to either before going "too far". If you want to push down on land price and perhaps gain greater privacy and freedom, you often have to look at trade offs and pushing up into worse weather and roads. "Too far" will vary for people but your cautions are important to see & hear. Stretching to consider is one thing, pulling back to a somewhat sounder / safer selection is often a good follow-up step. Maybe halfway to Buford or Federal or whatever satellite spot is far enough. In some cases maybe that isn't worth it. In some cases half or all the way might be.
