You know, Wheatland sounds like a place that needs to be added to my short list
Horse property is a priority for my wife. |

We love it here. Small town but close enough to both Casper and Cheyenne for things that we don't have here. Denver isn't far either. Laramie is close also. Good skiing within a couple of hours, lots of public land for hunting, horseback riding, etc. Water for fishing, water skiing also. Great people in Wheatland. I have met a few people that don't like it but I don't think they'd be happy anywhere.

MHT, How's the job market, in the areas surrounding Wheatland? Any work within an hours commute? I do industrial mechanical type work. I actually work for a newspaper here as an equipment mecahinc. Been doing it for 15 years now. Any newspapers in the area?
Does it get hot in the summer? I was doing some weather research yesterday, and it seems Wheatland can get a bit warm in the summer, although I'm sure it's mild compared with Southern California. I'm kinda trying to escape the heat ![]() Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get some perspective. |

It does get hot here in the summer but cools off some at night. It usually doesn't stay hot for more than a few days though. We open the windows at night and then shut up the house during the day and do fine. Many people have "swamp coolers" here that are used to cool the house/building. It is so dry here that the humidity these create is great! Housing prices aren't bad here either. Of course that depends on where you are comparing them too. Don't worry about the questions - anything I can help with is fine. Let me know. |

Thanks for the reply....no biggie, I understand about the holidays
. That is true, swamp coolers work very well in dry climates, and they are cheap to run. From where I am coming from with heat in the summer at 100 or more for days and sometimes weeks on end, a few days here and there, are'nt so bad, especially if it cools down at night. Some have made it sound like the wind blows 24/7 there, but in reality, does it blow less during spring/summer/fall? Looks like all of the pics I see, it doesn't look all that windy (trees standing straight up) but sometimes still photos are hard to tell. When I look at weather, it might say wind are @ 8 MPH, or 13 MPH, but I don't see much of anything like 55 or 60 MPH winds. Just kinda wondering just how bad the wind is. <<EDIT OOOPPSS saw your post in my other thread about the wind EDIT>>>> |

The wind does blow here more in the fall/winter than in the spring and summer. We usually have a breeze but in the winter it can really blow!! A couple of weeks ago we had 75+ gusts. I grew up in north central MT where all the trees lean to the east because of the wind so I don't think it's bad here at all.

Then don't leave out "Chugwater", they were offering 'free land' last I heard. (likely...not horse property...but you could 'swap that to a local rancher for some fence / shed equip/ repair)

whoops, sorry... $100, not free (income =limits apply, but... note the 'rural acreage' comments, something may be in the works!)
... http://www.chugwater.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={B872A06B-CACA-4E9C-BFDE-406B7CC1E2BA} here you go (may 2005...) nice pic!! http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...toryId=4647293 also http://www.time.com/time/magazine/ar...079474,00.html or http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/detail/88724 The similar spots in KS required $100k to be spent on home (which would be no problem, EXCEPT homes in towns were selling for $50k...) I'm also looking at free land in NE and ND, I would like to go and help with community development, bringing sustaining jobs to rural America. (that will be a challenge, but not impossible) Last edited by janb; 12-30-2006 at 04:47 PM. |

) johnvette, should check out 'usjobs.com' and get yourself a job at WYO Veteran's Home in Sheridan (they were soliciting for your type (industrial mech)) It's a really nice facility (my dad was there in 70's) and I just visited it again last year. Sheridan is pretty nice joint to call home, upwind from Wheatland, but downwind from MT (can be chilly...) but oh so close to 'BigHorns'... Met a group of cowboys moving a herd out of the high country above Burgess Jct. It would be a superb way to use your horses. We talked with them, and some of their friends had brought their horses up from Casper for the week. They were having a great time, and I'm not sure there is a more beautiful spot of 'High Meadow' / streams in the Rockies (that is accessible via a state hwy...14) gettin home sick ![]() |
