Isn't it great! The great state of Wyoming is only going to charge me an extra $50 to say I'm a veteran. Boy, they'll get their money any way they can.

Veteran Plates

Well, I remember Wyoming used to give Nam vets a $50 credit each year toward a set of tags. I don't remember what the total was... at least $500 over 10 years. I guess they're trying to get that back now, eh? I'm proud to be a vet but not THAT proud.

I'm sure somebody thought this was a good idea, but personally, I think they should offer them at no extra charge, at a reduced rate or not at all. Offering them for an extra $50 to those who placed their lives on the line for the country is just... tasteless!

I just went through the list of plates and fee's. Made me sick.

Veteran - $50
EMT - $30
National Guard - $0
Fire Fighter - $30
University of Wyoming - $130

and this one really ticked me off.

Gold Star Family - lost a loved one in war - $30 (however, it will be paid by another organization for now)

What are they thinking? Or are they even thinking?

That's ridiculous but a lot of states charge extra fees for veteran plates.

For a veteran $30. But if you are a National Guard Veteran, it's $0. It's almost like they are throwing darts at a price target when they come up with new plates.

It's almost like I don't want anybody to know I'm a vet, it's too expensive.

Exactly who should have to pay for these vanity plates? The veteran tax payer? I agree the Gold Star plate should be free...but everyone else should have to pay for their vanity.

If you're a vet and want to display that fact...buy a $2.00 bumper sticker.

And before anyone jumps all over me...I am multiple campaign veteran--retired in 2008. But I am not interested in displaying the fact at the expense of Mr and Mrs Joe-Six Pack.

I don't mind paying. But I've lived in other states and vanity plates were priced the same across the board. In Wyoming, it's almost like industry. They don't add a price, they look at what the market will bear. Should we pay for Handy capped plates? They're different and made special.

Just for comparison I checked to see what they charge here in Texas. All the military plates for any branch are $0 extra cost, each branch has its own custom plate. But for some reason a few like Pearl Harbor Survivor, Purple Heart and Disabled Vet cost an extra $3.00. Gold Star family plate costs $10 extra. http://www.txdmv.gov/vehicles/licens...g/military.htm

Again, that's even screwy. If you are active duty, stationed in Miami Florida, your spouse can get plates for your branch of service at no additional cost. However, should you be active duty stationed in Afghanistan, watch your back side, should you catch one, her plates go up by $10.

FYI, I just renewed my registration for a two year old vehicle, they cost $75. How does that compare with Wyoming plates costs?
