Smile want information on green river

I have the oportunity to go work the mines outside green river and I would like to find out how good of a job it is and how people like living there? I have been there and the housing is high, but so is Salk Lake. Are the schools good as i have a 14 year old son. Can you make a good living there?

I would like to here from people that live or lived there. I would also like to talk to people that work the mines or process plants.

Howdy 4 wheeler, My family and I lived in the Green River / Rock Springs area for 27 years. My father was an underground mechanic at Texas Gulf, Mom worked at the credit union at FMC. During my summer breaks in college I had the opportunity to work at both of these mines and also at the Stauffer mine. My wifes family members worked for Allied, which later became General. So I am familiar with all of the mines. Which one are you looking at ? Each mine has a large processing plant above ground and the undergrounds have large drifts/ not like coal mines. These are great jobs, great money, some are union some are not. Many folks in the area have worked at several of the mines during thier careers. I have heard that in the next year or so there will be over 200 people retiring from the FMC plant alone so there will be lots of opportunities there.
I enjoyed living in both communities. We moved there during the 70's boom years so there was much of the same growing pains then as now. During boom time there is lots of money floating around and with that comes sex, drugs and rock and roll. I have seen several people destroy themselves by getting caught up in this stuff. But there are some of the greatest people I have ever met in this area and I believe that you make the life you choose to make. So pick your friends carefully and work hard and you will make a great living. Wyomiles

thanks very much, as a matter of fact the job will be at FMC it seems to me like it would be a very good job. I know that it is union. I like the prospect of a smaller town than Salt Lake, however my wife is not as excited. I don't like the cold, but maybe if i do it right I can get a place in a warm area to visit when iI am off. I know it gets much colder than Salt Lake.

It is a life change as I am in a different line of work now but I think this would be more secure and a better job in the long run.

looks like I could take my son wheeling there and how is the fishing on the green?

Fishing on the Green River is great, as is Flaming Gorge Reservoir if you have a boat or like to ice fish. The Green River is better where it starts up north of Pinedale, much prettier up there too.
There's definately plenty of area to go 4-wheeling, that's a lot of people's recreation out here, that and dune buggies on the sand dunes.

4 wheeler, Your son will love growing up there. Lots of area to explore. I used to go out for hours at a time exploring the two track roads on BLM land. Sometimes it felt like I was the only one left on the face of the earth. We used to take trips down to SLC every once in a while, it's only a few hours drive. You will need to get your wife involved in something she enjoys. Have her take a class over in Rock Springs at the college. If you can help her meet people and make freinds it will help her feel more at home.
Lots of great fishing in that area, we spent a lot of time up north in the Windrivers.
Good luck with the new job !

We just moved here and love it so far beautiful place and the people are very nice. Only thing I hate is the slow speed limits in town hard to keep when its mostly down hill
