Default Lusk

Can anyone tell me about this area? My husband is driving out to Torrington the end of March for testing with the DOC. He was told that the prison in Lusk is in high demand as well. I can't seem to find much information on this area.

In the movie "Ready to Rumble", a wrestling flick staring David Arquette and Oliver Platt, Lusk was mentioned and parts of it were shot there as well...this probably doesn't help you but I think its pretty cool Cant wait to visit it this summer while touring the state....It looks like its in a pretty lonely county, with only 7 other towns showing up on a map, Douglas appears to be the closest "larger'' city town or whathave you near by.

I'm sure that if you checked out the links provided, you found out that there really isn't much there, so that's why there isn't much information about the area. Lusk (population ~1400) is the largest town in a very lightly populated area, yet is still a rather small town, even as far as Wyoming towns go. Niobrara County, where Lusk is located, has only about 2700 people, which is less than one person per square mile. If you ever visit there, you will find that if you wish to visit any town larger than Lusk, it is going to be at least an hour's drive.

The area is beautiful in summer, when the grass is green. That's the only time I've been through there. I'm sure it changes significantly during other seasons, and could become rather drab during certain times of the year. I'm sure others on this forum could speak more about that.

If you don't mind living in a small town in a very lightly populated area, where all of the larger towns are an hour or more away, then it might be worth checking out.

Compared to Lusk, Torrington is a big city. It is about six or seven times larger (by population), and has the benefit of being a little less than an hour away from Scottsbluff, NE, which has a population somewhere around 15,000, with most of the big city amenities (Walmart, Home Depot, etc.).

We are both leaning towards Torrington right now but the DOC mentioned that the Jail in Lusk is hiring....so I'm guessing that would be too far of a daily drive for work eh?

It's only 57 miles. 57 miles of being completely on your own with no safety net. Little to no traffic. No real assistance in that stretch, should you break down.

In Wyoming, it's not uncommon to have blowing snow that causes white out conditions. Visibility drops to near zero. 10 mph is moving right along during that time.

I've driven all my life in snow conditions and have probably pulled my fair shair of stupid stunts of traveling when I shouldn't. But I'm not sure I'd like to travel that distance knowing there is little traffic and no towns to get assistance shoudl something happen.

I wouldn't want to do it during the winter.

Default DOC in Lusk

Do most people who work in Lusk live there? My husband has this idea of living in Torrington and commuting to Lusk for work.

Probably more like 120 miles per day, plus the distance that you're out of town for your property.

More importantly, it's a fairly desolate road in that area and subject to a lot of winter storms that will make the drive less than a pleasure ... no matter how good a driver or what vehicle you're driving, it may take a good chunk of a work day to do this commute for 4-5 months of the year.

You'd do much better to find housing closer to work.
