What is the best way to find a decent job in Wyoming? I know energy and oil are big, but would a degree in those fields actually help?

What are some other industries that are hiring right now?

Well, in order to get a job in the Oil Industry, you'd have to apply in Colorado, or Utah. I'm not kidding. Seems that most outfits are out of state bidders and they bring their own crews. The only things that are locally grown are the inspector side of things. OSHA compliance, Mine Safety, etc... Even our construction is being done by out of state company's and they bring their own crews. They do hire a few labor type postitions, but nothing that would require training.

Other industry's??? Wyoming doesn't have any industry, so to speak, other then energy. There just isn't any manufacturing in the state. Don't know why. There are small spots of manufacturing but most only have a few employees.

Give www.wyomingatwork.com a shot. Register there and every job that is listed through job services is on that site, and it covers the entire state.

I know from my experience there are pleenty of jobs in the utility industry. Lineman, high voltage electrician, comm, but schooling and experience play a big part in the hiring process out here.

I've been watching the local newspaper for jobs the past month or so, hoping to find something I could do for a little bit (or a lot) of extra income. It seems that a large percentage of the ads are for those with a CDL and a couple years of experience. Most of the others are more specialized -- accountants, bookkeepers and engineers of one kind or another, or less specialized -- motel maids and desk clerks, cooks, janitors, etc. The latter ones don't pay living wages, imho.

In 2003 I landed in Laramie, the job market at the time was said to be bad, it was not as bad as it is today. I am a trained geologist and within 3 weeks I was an oilfield geologist in the Pinedale area. I dissagree with some of what has been said here. Energy service companies such as Schlumberger Haliburton, Century Wireline, have offices in places like Sheridan, Casper, Rock Springs, they hire locals. Uranium Companies I assume hire local people to maintain wells and pumps. I know they hire smaller drilling rigs that are localy owned and hire localy.
