Default I wanna move back to Evanston

I lived in Evanston for 3 years or so and was forced to move to michigan with my dad. I realize that I am underage but honestly when I graduate I'm going to move back. The scenery is defintly not bad (as I live in Dearborn Michigan just outside Detroit) and the wide open spaces out there are very refreshing. It gives you space to roam around. And as for the wind its really not that bad. I lived in Wyoming for 12 years and its windy anywhere you go, but the wind in the East of the state around Cheyenne and Rawlins is the worst of it. The wind in Evanston is not that bad. And the weather there is like any typical place in Wyoming also. It gets hot and dry in the summer and cold in the winter. If you honestly want to see mountains then I would advise you to drive two hours north to Star Valley.
As for the housing, my parents never had a lot of money but we were never really poor and had no problem finding a house.
In my opinion Evanston is a great place to live. Its full of interesting people and interesting events. The rodeos are a blast. The biker rodeo is the best though. But I guess I'm kinda bias on that as my stepdad is a member of the Vietnam Vets and I've grown up with bikers. Theres a lot of places with good food. If you wanna work out or go swimming you can head on over to the rec center. The people there are normally very nice.
But I dunno this is just an opinion from a 17 year old girl. Take it if you want it.

Default Why not leave?

If people would actually read the comments before they post replies... I stated my home was empty and for sale. that implies that i have left, geez. I still live in wyoming and where i live now, the mormons are a big joke. everyone in this town says the same thing, "we couldnt live with the mormons". There are many many many people who share this opinion. someone asked for info on Evanston, I gave my opinion. so, all you mormons who post replies stating why not leave? Is it the reading you have trouble with? or is it the comprehension.

So I wasn't going to get involved in this but your just plain immature. Seriously not everyone has the same problem as you, I see that mormons do tend to run things in evanston, and if you arent mormon then your SOL right...well instead of sitting there complaining about them why dont you try to do something about it. I realize you have moved from Evanston, and obviously you've done something about your little problem, but i dont see any reason to complain about them when they arent your problem any more. If other people agree with you then great...good for them...explains why they dont live in Evanston either. But there are other people who aren't Mormon who do enjoy Evanston, it takes looking beyond the things you dont like. Maybe you should have stated that you had left, instead of implying so, because hey who knows you could of moved to another area of Evanston where you werent "surrounded by Mormons" but hey you didnt state that either.
All in all I just think this goes back to something my grandparents and parents have told me since I was young, if you dont have something nice to say dont say it at all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it takes maturity to know if you should express that opinion or not.

And for the record, just in case you were wondering, I'm a Christain and I dont have a problem getting along with Mormons. I would rather deal with them then live in little Iraq right in the middle of America.

Have a very nice day.

Is it just me? I don't know what the hell religion my neighbor is. Could care less. Last year I was working in the garden, she brought me lemonaide and visited for a bit. Then, she had a yard sale. I took her some lemonaide. She's my neighbor, not some church going pastorial freak. Just a neighbor. I really think that some folks put way too much emphasis on other peoples business. I don't follow her down the street to see what church she goes to. But I will share a cup of coffee with her. I go over every day and give her dogs a bisquit. But I've never asked her what book she reads.

If people would look at their neighbor as a neighbor, not a religious emblem they would be better off.

Elk.. I TOTALLY agree with you. People have too many hangups and worry way too much about the little thing sin life. If they "stopped having a cow" about certain things, life would be even better.

I bet the dogs look forward to you coming over and enjoy the biscuit!

Folks, it does make a difference in towns like Evanston, Cokeville and the Star Valley towns like Afton, Thayne, Smoot, etc.(talking about religion, here).
Actually, it's better to say that it CAN make a difference. It mostly depends on what pocket you slip into. I spent many years in Evanston - from my perspective, it always sucked and always will ... however, I had good times there, have friends there ... and a couple of them even like it and always will.
I lived there because I had to ... after swearing years before that I never would - and when you're in a situation like that, you just have to make the best of it, know what I mean?
The fact that KEVA has a good "Tradeo" program on weekdays mornings or that Michael's has a good pastrami sandwich is not quite enough to elevate Evanston. What seems to make the most difference is if you were born and raised there - and liked it from the start. After that, it's just little personal things like; can you tolerate sticks with leaves or do you need real trees? can you work for a low minimum wage at part-time hours to survive or do you need a real income; can you put up with gouging mechanic-fees, poor restaurants and shopping for everything at Walmart or do you need a wide variety of events and entertainment?
The people I know who like it don't mind sticks with leaves - they actually like being able to look 70 miles in every direction and rarely see a tree (oh, they're there ... but you have to go and find them). Me? If I were to have a choice in that situation, I'd put myself in Sheridan and out in the Powder River area where it's a bit prettier.
However, in Evanston, you're 66 miles from Deer Valley - even closer to Park City resorts ... so, if you ski and don't need much money then - that's another reason to choose Evanston.
I would suggest that, when it comes to Evanston it's not really fair for the uninitiate to dump on someone that hates it because, frankly, a lot of people hate it ... there's just nowhere else close to be that's any better unless you really want to live in Utah - in which case you can trip down the hill to Salt Lake City ... and there's another good point about Evanston ... at least it ain't Utah - and that's what kept me going for 12 years. In addition, at least it ain't Idaho! After that, I'm not really one to defend it 'cause I need more than Evanston has to offer but I will certainly defend some peoples' right to like it - while also defending Cactus' right to hate it.

I would expect it seriously effects city government. But it certainly doesn't effect being a neighbor.

Some people have beliefs that they put to use in work or gov. But, they can live next door and you'd never know. Know what I mean? This lady has been a neighbor for years and I've never known what religion she is. She dresses up, so does her 35 year old son, and they go out. What they do and where they go, is no business of mine. Just like when I jump on the 4 wheeler and go some place, I don't expect their following me to see what I'm doing. I don't believe in organized religion. I go up on the mountain, walk back in the timber and I speak with my maker. We got a personal place up there. Wyody, you've been there. It's where the birds sing. The bear grunts. The elks bugle. The eagles crow. It's our special place and only few of us know where it is. So if the neighbor wants to follow her path, good for her. If she asks, I'll take her with me up on top.

The wheel is special to me. There's something about it that raises the hair on my neck. Not sure what it is. Ody? Know where I'm talking about? That doesn't make you and I special and above and beyond everybody else. Just gives us a special place to go where we feel piece. So if the neighbor has one of those places, good for her.

But, yes, I can really see that enough fanatics can influence the city. That's too bad. What happened to "Separation of Churck and State?"

I will go where the Eagles sing, the Elk bugle, the cougars screem and I will be with one. Paha Sapa is where I grew up and I learned from the best.

You're right ELK. I've watched this "neighbor" thing grow and probably peak and shrink. Coming from "the east", I didn't see it much except for those of us involved in "The Mother Earth" generation - people back there tended to be rather paranoid and only talked about things having been better in their extreme youth (we're talking 15th century or something here).
I moved to California - which was only different and not the light-years ahead like I'd heard ... but then, I moved to the Rockies. From Couer d'Alene to Helena to Williston all the way down to Flagstaff and Taos, it's got a "family" feel. Oh, it's dropped off over the past few decades with so many people moving in and out ... but it's still there. To live in Salt Lake meant you had friends at 4-corners and Billings - and acquaintances in Denver.
When you find that "neighbor" thing going on - it's a cool feeling ... and I don't mean to insinuate that Evanston doesn't have some of that going on - it does - but it can be a cold, cold place neighbor-wise ... it's a border-town. Happens a lot in places like that.
All the best bars there have been closed now for about 15 years - but we'll gather up in one some day, WAPITI - and toss a few someday.

Whether is the Paha Sapa, Wapiti or just loving the territory, unfortunately we as humans have to deal with the ppl in the towns we live in - IF we choose to live in towns (which I would give my right arm to live in the mountains again...not just butted up against them). You can live your own life (with care of the Paha Sapa's territory) but the question on this string was "Evanston, WY - tell me all about it". That includes the comunity, attitude, what is there, the surrounding area, the impacts various special interest groups etc. have in the town. I'm not crazy about Evanston in particular but the area AROUND it is awesome - the Uintas, Wasatch, Fort Bridger, Bridger National Forest, etc are worth putting up with some unpleasantries that are in EVERY town (thankfully we are all different). So getting into a religious argument here isn't appropriate. ALL of Wyo has a lot to offer depending upon what you are into. I LOVE the mountains & hunting but also the rock formations like on the hwy going up to Y'stone from Cody. I HATE living IN Cody - to "urban"; seems to want to be the "old west" with a cosmopolitan feel. Sorry...seems rather like an oxymoron. Unfortunately - in reply to whoever it was that said if you don't like where you live, move. Not as easy as you might think. It costs a lot to move & set up again. You can get trapped in a town for YEARS before you have the opportunity to move. And you have the right to hate it all that time, although is a real waste of energy & life...find the beauty where you live. The one thing I have learned in my life & I believe it WHOLEHEARTEDLY... NEVER move to where you love to vacation. Because when you see it everyday & work there & want to get away, where are you going to go? You are now LIVING in the place you ran to for solice. You stop seeing the beauty so much of the time.

P.S.- it seems so many of the threads in this forum end up bashing the mormons or whomever - I know there is a significant impact in many towns, but I think it is being blown WAY out of proportion - there is already a thread about that specific topic. Can the anti-mormon stuff be kept to a minimum on the other threads perhaps? There's no need to bash. I'm not mormon but just IMHO not necessary - or appropriate. Not trying to step on toes here, but a lot of things said ARE stepping on toes. Just a thought - my own & not representative of this board.
