Default Newcastle, WY info plz

I searched the forum and threads about Newcastle are a year old. Considering moving from Torrington to Newcastle and need info on quality of schools, eating places, climate, rec opps, etc. I've found 2010 pop. data so I know it is smaller than Torrington. Family and I do make about 6 trips a year to Black Hills, so I know it is closer.

Any other info from those who live there or have recently moved there is appreciated.

Real small compared to Torrington. Often wondered myself how it managed to exist. Doesn't appear to have anything going for it, except tourism, the rail yard and a few ranches that are being busted up for land sales.

We go to the Black Hills like 7 times a year and drive through Newcastle on the way, so I'm a bit familiar with it. I know they have a correctional facility (like Torrington), a bit of their economy from local energy jobs, etc.

Recent census puts pop. at 3,552, with Torrington 6,500, but their schools aren't that much smaller because evidently, Torrington's demographics include lots of retired people. I have young kids, so am kind of looking for a community with younger people.

Do you currently live there, gaduchman? What can you tell me about eating places, doctors, dentists, etc? BTW...thanks for the links. They were helpful.

They do have a small hospital/nursing home as well. The CEO is doing her best to run it into the ground though (almost got it shut down by running off the only permanent employee in the pharmacy ~ my wife did relief work there for a few years).

But that's all I know about the place as I never went with my wife. Her description made it sound like a small town full of roughnecks/rednecks (loud trucks, lots of drunks).

We run through Newcastle last year. Didn't prefer this town; we prefered Torrington's, downtown, cleanliness, and larger size in comparison. Also, it's only 30 min. to Scottsbluff, Nebraska for all you don't have there!

More we look at the state, we actually most prefer, Powell, Cody or Sheridan area, so can't really say much more on East Wyoming.

I have lived in Newcastle since 1983. The town has cleaned up a bunch since we've moved here, but the number of local businesses has decreased substantially. New highway project enhanced downtown's looks a bunch. I think it looks nicer than Torrington downtown, but the number of businesses is less for sure.

We have 2 brand new schools (high school and grade school) and the middle school was just completely redone both inside and out. My daughters both got great educations here. We also have a very nice indoor pool on the school campus. We have 2 grocery stores but neither offers much variety. Gas here is cheaper than some places, but generally more expensive than most of Wyoming. I think it's because we are so close to the Black Hills and touristy areas. We have ahospital which teeters on the edge of closing it seems. No obstetric services and mostly some place to stabilize a person before they go to Rapid City, SD or Casper, WY.

They do offer alot of college courses thru EWCC here and I know alot of people have gotten degrees from this program. If you like to camp and hunt, the choices are almost limitless. Housing is not as expensive as many parts of the state. Restaurant choices are not great. We have a Subway, Pizza Hut, some local eateries that are nondescript, a pretty good little Italian restaurant. This is one of my biggest gripes is that we have few places to eat and not alot to do other than camping and hunting. We are 65 miles from Spearfish, SD (really pretty college town with good eats and some shopping), and 80 miles from Rapid City, SD with all the ammenities most people require.

Hope this helps.

My family is thinking of moving to newcastle. We have an 8 year old autistic boy and 2 girls that arei n the gem (very smart) program at school. I would like to know if they have a special education program and gem program? Do you get a lot of snow? Do you have a wal-mart close by?

Newcastle has a rather good special ed program I think. I'm not sure about a program like gem tho. My daughters took courses that were for college credit while they took them in high school. I think our kids get a good education here and the middle school has been completely remodeled this year and the high school and grade school are close to brand new. We also have a great aquatic center on campus and the track is one of the best around. The good thing about Newcastle is that it is till pretty darned safe. No place is totally safe, but I never really worry about gangs or dangerous criminal activity here. It definitely counts for something if you're raising children.

As far as a Walmart goes, the closest one is in Spearfish, SD (about 65 miles NE of Newcastle). They have a KMart too. We have a Pamida here which is a very scaled down KMart type store. It's better than nothing. Rapid City, SD is about 80 to 85 miles east and it has all the stores you pretty much could want for shopping (Walmart, Sam's Club, Kohls, Best Buy, Target, Cabellas, Sears, Pennys, Herbergers, and many more).

Snow can vary from year to year. We are known to get some pretty good snows here, but often we get less than the towns around us. We are protected by the Black Hills as we are located at the base of them. We often escape the wind and bad weather that the surrounding towns get. But we do get snow in the winter, but have alot of sunny weather even if the temps are low.
