Retiring Military relocation/job hunting
My husband is retiring from the military and would like to return to his home state of Wyoming. We are targeting the Sheridan area and would like to find employment before moving out there. I am seeking advise on finding jobs in the area. Is there more word of mouth, referral hiring happening than posting positions online? We've been looking at all the major boards, wyoatwork, usajobs etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's the job services web sites. You can put in your desired wage, desired town and it will list the jobs available. It will show you the wage, the hours, the required background, the benefits, a complete job description, where and when. All the details.
The first one is all the jobs. Just enter a city/town and it will list them. Sheridan has over 400 jobs listed. The second one is same as the first, only it's strictly state jobs.
Enjoy. Hope I helped.

As a military retiree, you may wish to consider Cheyenne, the home of FE Warren AFB, so that you can avail yourself of the commissary and BX privileges your husband has earned.
What type of work is your husband looking for, and what type of housing/community are you looking for? There are a lot of good folks on this board who will point you in the right direction if they have some additional information.

Thanks for reply
Thank you for your responses. My husbands background is in facilities managment, project management, developing contractor specs, quality inspector and the like.
We are targeting Sheridan/Buffalo specifically. We just got back from our Wy tour last week and it seems the best ratio of mountains/affordability/character and not too small community. Community wise, we are looking for kid/teenager friendly. High School team must have competitive football and baseball teams.

This morning, on the radio, the Wyoming Jobs people at the employment office announced that there were over 400 jobs posted and needing filled in Sheridan County.
Course, there's only 2 studio appartments available for people moving in.

Yes, we see jobs online. Just surprised at how low the pay is...
It is tough thinking your going from $70k to $15/hr..housing prices don't seem that cheap.

That's the problem with the energy boom. People come in here in droves and there's nothing left. I have several friends that are carpenters. Their bosses are buying land and starting construction and the place is sold before it's framed. Course, that's going to drive prices up. But I figure in about 10 years when it levels out, I'll pick me up a place or two. haha
I already own a home that I bought in 1993 and I can really simpathize with you. I have a 1600 sq ft home I paid $27,500 for.
Now, if you are interested in mobile homes, or even modulars, you can get in pretty reasonable. I know a guy that has a 3 bed, 2 bath modular. He'd probably take $35,000. for it.
But for new built, the market is nuts.

Pretty much all of the modular homes I saw in Buffalo were going for the same or more as the stick-built homes. I bought my home there for $205K and THAT was a great deal. Some modulars that the realtor showed me were asking $237K+ and they weren't new. If I saw a modular home for $35K, my first reaction would be to ask what the heck is wrong with it. Heck, the vacant LOT next to my home is selling for $30K.

I replied to your PM, but wanted to add on to what I said. If your husband is open to other opportunities available and has the ability to learn quickly, as most of us in the military have, then the possibilities there should be plenty. Like I said, they're in such demand for motivated workers in the energy industry out there and the pay is good. Entry level positions at my company start at $22.75/hr. And overtime is typically 15%-25%. I can't honestly think of another place out there where you should expect to get close to the same pay as you're getting in the military to start out at. Plus he'll be getting a nice retirement check from Uncle Sam so that should help offset.

These modulars are in a mobile home park and you don't get the land. But you do get $240 a month lot rent, plus utilities. But it's certainly a stepping stone to hold you over for that special deal.
