Evanston is at 6750ft above sea-level.
A good job in Evanston is $7.50 an hr at 32 hrs a week.
No, you can't quite get by on that.
The population fluctuates but usual claims are 11,000.
I swear, I lived there many years - just left in Feb 07 - I've never figured the pop. at over 3000.
Welcome to WalMart!
Winter lows only get to about -22 (that's below zero).
There are probably two days a winter where your car won't start 'til about 3:00 in the afternoon ... unless you have a garage.
Like all local hospitals - the locals will tell you the Evanston hospital is a "death-trap". However, it's all you've got unless you travel to Salt Lake City - which is about 82 miles to the I-15/I-80 junction.
You'll have WalMart, Smith's Food & Drug and whatever the local IGA is called now for groceries.
The town is filled with motels, gas-stations, 2 truck-stops, several bars and a few restaurants.
There are over a half-dozen Bison and two Bull-Elk fenced at the Bear River State Park.
The Uinta Mountains are about 25 miles south - depending on where you're going - you can pick up a permit at the border with Utah (the mtns are in Utah).
There is a Rendevous in August.
While being in Wyoming, it is HUGELY affected by Utah and the LDS Church - as are all towns within reach of Salt Lake - this leaves it on the conservative side with the Wyoming radical-side still somewhat present.
There are some better paying jobs. Good luck.
The old adage is that Evanston has " ... a cop for every car" - and this is a good thing to keep in mind ... even though it is an exaggeration (weekdays, anyway).
Paramutuel Betting at the Horse-Track 10 miles north.
190 miles to Jackson - abt 240 to Yellowstone.
And as with all Rocky Mtn area towns - if you don't have it done by October (chores, hay, wood) - it won't get done 'til March.
The wind blows at or far above 20mph whenever the sun is out - almost.
It's 100 miles to Flaming Gorge.
There are houses for sale everywhere - but beware of prices - these people think they're in California! (as does Utah/ID).
Hope this helps - here's a couple of links:

I think rockymtnr about said it all. I lived there in the 1980's and liked it well enough, I found it to be pretty much transient oil field workers. I wasn't into party scenes or bar hopping, never really developed any close friendships either. I've lived in three different parts of WY and found the WY natives not particularly friendly to us "easterners" and were not shy about pointing it out. I loved the countryside, hunting and fishing opportunities, the wilderness areas...I liked just about everything I saw in WY. Although I haven't been there in a number of years, my impression is there isn't much in WY that changes (except in Jackson) and frankly, I find that rather appealing. I do know that in the smaller towns where I've lived, the men are separated from the boys in pretty quick order. My $.02.

Thumbs up Thanks!

Thanks Delanyland!

Anyone else? I am going out for a 4 day trip around the time of my interview, but that will be my only chance to get to know that area before I move there. Any suggestionbs for local restaurants or places to stop in order to get to know the "local" situations?

Default I'm in the same boat

Hi,

Thank you for posting this. My husband is being offered a job in Evanston, and we fly out at the end of the month to check out the town. I am extremely apprehensive about it. I've NEVER been in a small town before and have lived in California most of my life. I'm not against small towns, I just want to make sure that my two little ones have a nice place to grow up. If you could post a reply as to your experience once you get there, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thumbs up I will

I am going next weekend. I will be there from Sat. 18 - Tues. 21. From what I have heard Evanston is one of the larger towns (for WY anyway) at 11,000- which is fairly small. However they have a Super Wal-mart and a JC Penny...and for most people that's all you need . Then one is an hour and a half from Salt Lake City- big city shopping. However I have a feleing not a lot of traveling to SLC happens during the winter.

I have lived in small towns before and prefer the community familiarity over big cities- however I ahve never lived in a small town that was not within 20-30 mins. to a big city. While this will be a little bit of a change for me, I am looking forward to it.

I will post here after my trip....but let me know if you move there also! It may be nice to know someone . Also, I would think it might be smart to move as early as possible, once the snow starts it may be tougher to move and get settled in.

A couple of things. Travel in the winter is not as bad as people point out. Travel at times has been bad and people want you to understand that. But travel between Evanston and Salt Lake, is fairly easy. There might be two times in a year that you can't do it. Not that you shouldn't, but that you can't. I've traveled that route a lot. Normally, if the road is going to be closed, it's closed from Evanston East. Going West, you drop down in the canyon and the wind isn't going to be a factor.

The second thing is that Evanston is a quaint little town. It was mentioned that 10,000 people is small. Well, it's one of our biggest. haha Here in Sheridan, we have 15,000 and we're considered a large town. Course, with only 500,000 people in the whole state, the towns tend to be small. But they are robust with culture. We may not have the latest brain surgery stem cell research center. but by golly we have a doctor that's good.

Yep- thanks jgussler! I'm excited to see Evanston. I currently live in a town similar in population, I just live right outside of a big city. It will be interesting to live an hour and a half away from one.

Have I mentioned I'm excited?
