So now we've found a possibility in Story with a rental property. I just wanted to see how far the drive to Buffalo is going to be since my job is about 35 miles east of there...right around the Powder River where the rest area is on I-90. It's actually another 15 minutes north of 90 from the rest stop to where I work. I'm figuring that if I can get a place in Story, the extra drive time may be worth it since I haven't had luck with housing in Buffalo so far.

Another thought is Clairmont or Arvada. Small towns, not a lot of ammenities, but houses are available and it's not a bad jaunt to Sheridan or Buffalo for grub.

So is the drive time to Story 20-25 minutes because the roads off of I-90 are harder to navigate? I drove from Sheridan to Buffalo in 30-35 minutes on my last visit there, and Story is almost exactly in the middle of the two.

Yeah, narrow road, lots and lots of critters. Not as maintained as the interstate. Course, I'm being pretty conservative with the 20-25 minutes.
A buddy of mine said, "Hell I can do it in 10!" But he's also the guy that says, "Hold my beer and watch this."

story
I like story, but I would not choose to live there. For one, they are notorious for having bad water. The wells are shallow and are quite often contaminated from leaking septic tanks. I use to work at a lab that analyzed a lot of drinking water samples from up there and it was not usually good news.
2nd, I keep wondering when Story is going to burn down? It seems like a timber box waiting to go. There is a 4,000+ acre fire burning on the face of the mountain by Big Horn right now. Fortunately for Story, the fire is going north and not south.
3rd, the deer are crazy in Story and when you have huge numbers of deer you also end up with critters that like to eat deer - Mountain Lions. Buffalo has our fair share of them as well, but I think if I lived in Story, the lions would always be at the forefront of my mind, since I have 2 children.
4th, and lastly, I don't know about the quality of the school in Story, but I know of families that live in Story and send their kids to school in Buffalo (they drive them to the county line to catch the bus at the Kearney community building). 2 times, this past winter, the interstate was shut down and the kids were all stranded in Buffalo and unable to get home. During the big blizzard in march, they were stuck in Buffalo for 3 days.
Anyway, sorry to be a nay sayer. Like I said, I like story, it's a nice place to visit, but I would not choose to live there.

Although people would not like to admit it... You hit it spot on.
It's a nice little quiet community, but when you look at the whole picture, it's not that pretty.

I totally agree with everything you said also. Another thing I would be concerned about is the drug problem. I am not sure about these day but I know a few years ago that was a hugh issue with the teenagers growing up there. The couldnt seem to find anything else to do up there. But I quess that if you were retired that may not be a problem.

Right, I forgot to mention that. My husband grew up in Sheridan and I have heard plenty about drugs being a problem in story. Story, atleast in the past, tended to attract people that wanted to keep to themselves. The "clientele" of Story is changing I'm sure, with the outrageous housing prices, but it definitely has been a problem up there atleast in the past.
The biggest current issue facing Story is safe drinking water.
Yes, it's about a 20 minute drive, on dry roads, from Story to Buffalo.
