But it's no place to live unless you are a fan of highway horror movies.
|
So funny, it's not scary to stop at Loves and fill up or whatever, but I wouldn't want to venture into town and look for a place to lay my head if such a place even exists, I'd sooner sleep in my car.

Wamsutter wants to build 80 houses by June of this year. This is what the city is wanting, I think they're nuts but more power to them. If they can find someone to take it on and then if they can find enough subs/workers to accomplish that I'm going to go sit and watch! lol....

Go figure... You tried to advertise... lol. Yeah, this town is just full of down to earth people. The only thing you are trying to do is reach in other peoples pockets with your greedy hands. Reach it's potential? HAha.
Basically Wamsutter consists of two things. Greedy people, and drunk losers. The town won't even hire a town cop, because one of the guys on town council owns property in Wamsutter. The fact is that if the hire a cop, the city already owns a house and land. But since they "can't afford" a police officer, Sweetwater county will have to bring in an additional Sherriff, and purchase land from this council member to house him.
Sell the land while its worth something... Hell, I bet you got a buyer in "WamsutterTrailerCourt".

About Wamsutter
I have lived in Wamsutter for 1 1/2 years and wanted to provide some "real-life" answers. I will first divulge that I am the community developer here so I can give you some idea of what's to come but will be as honest as possible. I moved here from the rural midwest so I am used to the long drives for supplies. That said....I love it here. The town has a lot of opportunity and anyone who likes to be involved in a small community can really make a difference.
The school is pre-K - 8 and older students are bused to Rawlins. The bus runs several times a day to accomodate those students that are in after-school activities. As the population grows, there is the potential for a high school here in Wamsutter. We have an excellent childcare facility and have just started a youth program (along the lines of boys & girls clubs) that is open during the summer and will be running after school. The town has 2 parks - 1 huge town park that has 2 softball fields, tennis court, basketball court, lots of shelters, playground equipment and greenspace; and 1 new centrally located park (next to the childcare center) with a skatepark, basketball court, playground equipment and greenspace.
The town is currently constructing 8 homes (3 bedroom) with a price range of $150,000 - $160,000 and apartments will be constructed in the next few months. Our goal is to offer families/workers a better quality of housing and eventually eliminate many of the trailers. Currently 60 acres are under housing development.
There is a beauty shop which also offers tanning and exercise equipment. A massage therapist visits on a weekly, sometimes monthly basis, depending on how many appointments she has. We have 3 restaurants and 4 convenience stores - 2 of which offer expanded grocery items. And you can drop off your dry-cleaning at one!
We have a branch of the Sweetwater County Library that has a great book selection and also holds a lot of activities for the kids - the library and skatepark are the local hang-out for teens. There is a dirt-bike track on the northern edge of town that get a lot of use during the summer.
Due to lack of socialization for women, many of the local ladies started a women's group where they meet weekly for breakfast and offer such groups as book club, exercise group, etc.
The town has a Baptist Church, Catholic Church and the LDS Church is planning to re-open when the population grows.
Many women are active in school activies and civic committees. We have a beautification committee and a communication committee that publishes the monthly newsletter (our newspaper of sorts) and new volunteers are always welcome! We have a very active volunteer EMS and Fire department that is always looking for new members.
The town is currently working on creating a health center. By spring we should be able to construct a strip mall to house a grocery store, bank, laundromat and a few other retail spaces. The town is also moving forward on the creation of a new Town Hall, Rec Center and Library.
3 hotels will begin construction late this fall through spring. In short, due to our location along I-80 and investment from Industry Wamsutter is going through rapid growth.
The town has sunk alot of funding in upgrading our infrastructure. We have a good source of water and no, I have never had any of my laundry turn brown. It's good water just highly mineralized and doesn't taste that great, so I do cook with it but don't drink it.
During bad winter storms you can get "stuck" in Wamsutter when they close I-80 - but you are going to get stuck in any town when they close I-80.
There is a very "Northern Exposure" quality to Wamsutter. The people are very accepting and friendly. The local bar is the only social scene for now, but it is very laid back.
Anyone that wants to work can find a job in Wamsutter. We have over 60 industry related businesses in town, one of which is BP's headquarters.
Myself, I like the quiet, stress-free quality of life. In the winter I can walk out my front door and strap on my x-country skiis. The school has a few pottery wheels and a kiln they don't use so I'm looking foward to trying my hand at pottery.
Life is what you make it in Wamsutter. I can understand why people from a large city wouldn't like it here. Hope this helps.
By the way - 3 Highway Patrolmen and 2 County Sheriff's Deputy's live in Wamsutter. One of the deputy's lives in "town owned" housing. Both provide law enforcement for the municipality. Crime is extremely low. As a matter of fact, most arrests seem to come from traveler's stopping at Love's. Rock Springs has a huge drug problem. There was a documentary filmed there called "American Meth".
Due to the projected growth; land is selling significantly higher than appraised value.
Current population is between 850-1200.
I would suggest Waldnerfan attend a council meeting and get their facts straight.

Howdy Wamsutter, thanks for the post. So You mentioned several times that "the Town is building this or that" How is that funded? Are the energy companies pitching in? Does the state fund this ?
Also when you mentioned the clay and pottery. There was someone on here a while back who went by the name of clay lady , I think, she might be a good person to contact about putting that stuff to good use ?

I to live in Wamsutter
I am a current resident of Wamsutter. I am also an active part of the growing community and have 3 children that attend school. I have lived in Wyoming for many years and never thought I would call Wamsutter Home. First of all a home is what you make of it. There are some really great people that live in this community that I have the honor to know. I also serve as an EMT on our Volunteer service. When I first moved here I didn't know what things were going to be like but with an open mind and heart I have really grown to enjoy where I am. I have a wonderful job and have high hopes for this community. There is a lot of growth taking place in Wamsutter latley that all of us community members should be proud of. As for drugs in the community I don't know a town in Wyoming that hasn't had it at one time or another. It is how you teach the youth of our commmunity to handle such pressures. We have started a youth services group for the kids and so far I am impressed by the director that has joined us. My kids love the involement and there is much more to come for the members young and old of this community. It's all in what you make of it and you can't be afraid of change or to make change. What drives me is making a better place for my kids regardless of where I am at.

Wamsutter $$$
Hello Wyomiles. Wamsutter is using a combination of public and private funds for our projects. We have received several grants for infrastructure and industry has provided matching funds for several of these projects. We do make requests of industry for community investment and they have been very generous - not only financially, many of our local businesses donate in-kind labor and equipment on some of our smaller projects. Much of what we do is grassroots and encourages partnerships which results in successful projects.
Most importantly, Wamsutter spends a lot of time planning. In 2004 town, state officials, and industry partners sat down and came up with 8 items that were essential to growth. These were accomplished in 2007 and we sat down and created the 2nd phase. We have also developed a non-profit which manages the fiscal responsibility for community betterment projects.
I know this doesn't completely answer your question, but it would be quite lengthy if I tried to detail all the projects and funding areas we are utilizing.
Thanks for your interest!

Does Clay Lady live in the area? If so, I'm sure there would be several residents who would enjoy a new hobby!
