Wide spot in the road, with parking. haha Actually, I know nothing about it. Been by it a hundred times but didn't see a town. Used to think that it was just a sign.
Hopefully somebody will add some info.

very few people live there.most of the gas field workers commute from rawlins or rocksprings.its basicly a truckstop, bar, and some trailers.would make a good setting for the next madmax movie.there is a lot of money to be made there but almost no one wants to live there.

So did you buy this land without seeing it ?
My guess is it is fairly flat , covered with sagebrush, no water, windy, blizzards in the winter, if you are lucky it is not covered in alkalie. If you are a pioneering type you will love it ! It has lots of potential if you can get good water to it.

I DID live in Wamsutter
I am female and I was married to a guy who worked in the oil fields. This was in the late 70s, early 80s, so it's been a while, but from the looks of things, not much has changed since I was there, except a couple of bars are closed and it looks like a couple of gas stations and other buildings are either not there or are in disrepair.
When I lived there, it was awful. Nothing but Red Desert for as far as you can see. Dust storms ALL the time. Before I first moved there, I was told that as far as trees, bushes, etc., nothing grows over 7 inches tall there. There is a lot of tumbleweed along with the dust.
Almost everyone lives in trailers there, but there are a few houses. The train goes through the center of "town" and there was no arm that came down to block traffic when a train is going through, only a set of flashing lights and those didn't work most of the time. People were always getting hit by trains there. In fact, I came very close one day myself. It's open range there, so cattle and horses lumber through, along with any other wildlife that may be in the area (lots of mountain goats, sheep, etc.). As I remember, it was foggy there a LOT, so you had to travel very slowly so as not to hit anything that might be in the road.
Oh, and the roads....There was nothing paved when I lived there except the highway - Rt. 80 - that is not far from where the trailer park is.
There are a lot of transients in the town. The town is VERY rough. There is a lot of spousal abuse, child abuse, animal abuse. I suppose a lot of that comes from not having anything to do there, except come home from working 16 hour days 7 days a week and sit at the bar and drink. There are very few women there.
All in all, it's not a spot I would want to live in again.
Sue

Forgot to mention
The closest towns are Rawlins (about 40 miles to the east) and Rock Springs (about 60 miles to the west). During the winter, they have gaits on the highway that they close when the wind blows, so getting in and out of Wamsutter is almost impossible in the winter. We used to stock a huge chest freezer full for the winter.
Last I knew, Rock Springs was a pretty rough town, itself. There was always a lot of crime there; specifically robberies, murder, you know - the usual stuff...LOL

Sell your land now... or if you have enough of it along with the mineral rights, you may be a millionare if you keep it and drill it...
But it's no place to live unless you are a fan of highway horror movies.

In the late seventies and early eighties. If you had a friend that came up missing. Around Rocksprings. We had to wait until spring around wamsutter and the red desert. To see if they turned up....... Alot of people were found when the snow melted. Most met untimely deaths. For one reason or another.
My best one was the man I knew that commited suicide. He was found laying on the motel bed. Gun in hand. Knife on floor. Stabbed twice in the heart and shot in the back of the head!!!!
He delt drugs, and alittle more.

I was born and raised in Wamsutter. At 18 I left to go to college. After working 8 years for Qwest as Manager of Data Network Engineering, I got tired of the corporate life and moved back to Wamsutter. I took over the property management of the trailer courts in Wamsutter. I own land and am developing residential lots, commercial lots, and industrial land. The town does currently have a lot of trailer homes, but I am working to change all that. The people who call Wamsutter HOME, are the nicest down to earth people you will ever met. Wamsutter is a small town if lots of potential. I am working to help the town reach that potential.

Wamsutter has two new gas stations. One is a Love's. The other is Sinclair. I had heard terrible things about the town and had driven by hundreds of times, when one day I was so tired, I had to pull over. I bought some snacks and used a restroom and drove away alive. Hahaha. Seriously, it was not as scary as I had been led to believe. But I think the drugs from Rock Springs are spreading east. . .
