Well after years of talking about it, and spending the last year planning, and researching, and taking a long trip out west last year to explore. We had a short list of towns we were interested in Bozeman,MT Great Falls,MT Cody,WY Sheridan,WY and Ft. Collins,CO. After looking over everything we decided on Cody it has what we wanted in a new home, and not the rat race that we left behind. So we packed everything we owned into a 26' u-haul, put my wifes van on a car carrier and stuffed it too then hooked it to the u-haul. My wife and kids followed me in our truck and 2100 miles and 5 days later we made it here. We had work and a nice rental home lined up before we left, so those were things we dint have to worrie about. We moved in to the house with some help of some local folks, started work which is going very well, and the kids started school and they both love their schools and are making new friends ( which was one of my fears - having trouble adjusting) . So we are all very happy with our new home, and it pays to do your homework. There will be a few things that we will miss from Pennsylvania, but there so many new things to enjoy in Wyoming.
Welcome to Wyoming. Glad to hear everything is going well for you. You are about to enjoy what I feel is the best time of the year in Wyoming and that is fall. Especially if you are a hunter. I am not but still love the time of year. I am in Sheridan but lived in Cody for about 8 years. Be sure to enjoy the park this fall. In my opinion that is far the best to see it. Most tourist are gone and the animals are active. Enjoy
Congrats on your move
What type of work do you do, and was it hard to find employment? Although I am sorta favoring North Id for relocation, the job situation, or lack of, scares me. Cody and surrounding areas are still on my short list. I am basically a blue collar worker...i.e. mecahincal type work. Is there any industry there at all?

The good: Any able-bodied guy with a good work ethic will have no problem finding a job in Wyoming. The oil fields are starting laborers with no experience at $62,000. Workers with real skills can make muck more, especially skilled welders.
The not so good: Read the numerous posts on this board concerning housing availability, rough winters, lack of shopping and other such concerns. Personally, I love it here, but you have to accept that a sparsely populated state (less than 5 people per square mile) will not have the amenities found in populated areas.

Thanks sixophone.
I have read just about every post on the forum for WY over the last few months. That is why I am favoring north western WY, over other areas of the state. Just wasn't sure about the job market in the Cody, Powell, Lovell areas. Also Sheridan/Buffalo seem like a good fit also. I definitely understand about the housing shortage. Read a lot about that. Does the shortage pertain mainly to rentals or purchases, or both?
I'm going to try to experience rough winter at the end of this year. Hoping to get to North ID, and maybe even a stint in WY. Have to experience it first hand. Maybe Christmas/New Years.
Lack of shopping is fine with me. Only thing I need is a job, and a doctor I'm a no frills kinda person. Just need somewhere, where I can buy Jeans/T-shirts, and equine supplies (for the wifes horses).

That made me chuckle, those of you familiar with Wyoming winters know why. Winter in Wyo doesn't really get started until January and doesn't show it's glory until March or April. Depending on where you live and the elevation it rears its ugly head all through May and June when you're long over building snowmen. You may want to visit in March to see what it's really like. Not to say that we don't get any storms in Dec/Jan but the temperatures aren't as low then. Most times we get a teaser in February, it warms to 40 or so and everyone dreams that spring might be here, then March hits and we remember where we live again. Don't get me wrong, I love Wyoming along with it's weather and everything else it throws at you, but like someone else on this forum once said, "it is not for the faint of heart".
I have 2 photos in Laramie, dated June 2003 and June 2005, of my jetski trailer (covers off and everything) with anywhere from 3 - 6 inches of snow on top of them. The weather had turned "nice" (full wetsuits with blue lips, mind you) so we had the jetskis out at Hattie. Then June Wyoming weather came.
I agree that most of the wicked WY weather comes in March and sometimes early April. Our school closings are always in those months. We do get snow in Dec/Jan, but the seasonal kind that people from other states might expect.

Wyolady - Wow you're more daring than me, Hattie is unpredictable as best, and the windiest lake in Wyoming in my opinion.
A friend of ours went ice fishing by himself one year on Hattie. He got his hut set up and was inside heating up a can of spaghettios of all things when the famous lake Hattie wind came up and picked up his hut him and all flipped it upside down in the air and sent it slamming back down on the ice. Needless to say he was done icefishing that day. I can just see him crawling out of the hut covered in spaghettios! He learned to secure his ice hut after that, well after he bought a new one anyway.
Thanks for the heads up as to when the worst weather is. My wife is already off at the end of the year, so we'll try to make the trip anyway. Guess we'll try for a March/april trip next year
I am in Sheridan but lived in Cody for about 8 years.
My husband and I have started researching Wyoming and are looking at a possible move. I work in higher education and he works with CNC machines. He was from a smaller town and met me and I've been living in a larger town south of Portland, Oregon.
We'd like to find a palce with less people and the people who are there - friendlier. We enjoy the outdoors.
What would you recommend about Sheridan? or any other place in Wyoming?
Thanks!
