Default Gillette makes top 10 cities for Winter Liveability

Gillette made the list as #10 in the TOP 10 Cities for Winter Liveability. Who would have thought Gillette could and would, beat out Jackson?

Top 10 Winter Cities - Gillette, WY | Livability

Lots of great information about Gillette!

Maybe because the average working Joe can afford to live in Gillette.

I like Gillette or wouldn't still live here, but I had to scratch my head about that top 10 listing myself!

I noticed that most of the other towns were ski resort type, or a little more "high society" or high dollar places. You'd think that when they say, "Winter Cities", that skiing, snow mobiling, hockey, etc... are the top priority's> Don't see much of any of that around Gillette. But they also didn't do much for explainations on how everything was picked.

Gillette and the Camplex does have a lot going on for it though. Seems there is always something going on there.

I think it's nice to see a town that isn't a high dollar place make a list like that. Not everyone can live in places like those. In reading that article I was surprised to see that it said there was a large elk population there. Is that true?

Could've fooled me a few weeks ago. The Camplex was shut down tighter than a drum, and I was in the RV park directly across from the main entrance.

I saw in the paper that they had some high school competition scheduled later that week, but it was only a single evening event and they weren't opening up the campgrounds for it.

I do wonder why towns that do have a year around community and substantial winter time activities didn't make the top 10 ...

Jackson certainly comes to mind, as well ... Vail/Beaver Creek, or Park City ... or one of my favorite communities in UT's mountains area ... Heber City.

On a different scale, I sure enjoy Dubois & Lander WY in the winter months, too.

Area 129 is one of the best Elk Hunting areas around. Plus, their rifle season starts well ahead of any of the Big Horn seasons. Sept 1 starts Elk Rifle in area 129. Some of the states biggest trophy's come out of there.

The biggest problem with area 129 is most of it is private land and what BLM land is there is land locked by private land. So you pretty much have to know somebody to get in the decent area's to hunt.

Side note. Did you know that the largest Elk Herd in the lower 48 is in Wyoming, out on the Red Desert.

I knew about the Red Desert herd and have seen elk out there, but didn't know that was the largest herd in the state.
