First DUI offense:
Jail - 48 hours to 11 months.
Fine - From $350 to $1,500
License suspension - 1 year
Ignition Interlock device required if blood alcohol content is above .15 or a passenger under 18 or there's an implied consent/test refusal.

Second offense - 45 days to 1 year in jail; $600-$3500 fines; 2 yrs license revocation.

Third offense - 120 days - 1 year in jail; $1,100-$10,000 in fines and 3-10 years license revocation.

The laws tend to wake a lot of young people up.

It isn't just young people. As a matter of fact, it seems that most of the repeat offenders I read about in the Gazette are middle aged people....mostly men, but certainly some women, too. That being said, they most likely started when they were young, got away with it, and are still on the trail to destruction by middle age.

Oh, I agree that it's not all kids. I've just had more experience with younger people who've been scared off by it. I have a family member who had a number of DUIs in more lenient states. It took almost dying from alcohol poisoning and losing his license for years for him to wake up at all. If they hadn't given him a "break" when it first started, a lot of heartache might have been saved and a lot of fellow drivers would have been a lot safer.

Aaaargh! Fortunately there are people working to get laws regarding the way kids have to testify. It may help nail more of these perverts.

Unfortunately, the changes aren't already in place.

This was in our area. I hate that he got probation, but there was apparently a strong likelihood that a jury would not find his actions to be "abuse" under Wyoming code requirements. It would seem there have been similar cases in which the jury found the behavior was distasteful but not abusive. As such, the plea bargain makes sure that he can't be anywhere around those girls for the next 5 years. Taking it to trial could have wound up with his still having access to them.

We had a similar situation with a former in-law. It's a tricky decision to make - to guarantee (as much as humanly possible) the safety of two adolescent girls from an abusive monster for 5 years or prosecute to the fullest, knowing he could be acquitted and start doing the same thing the next day.

Personally, I'd like it if he could be wrapped up in bacon and thrown to the grizzlies. Alas, that doesn't seem to be an option at this point.

Im all for giving first non violent offenders a break.
However second offense shoud be winter road work on the 80 between laramie and Rawlins. There wont be a third.

I'm all for not airing our dirty laundry where potential tourists and productive people and prosperous retirees who have considered moving to Wyoming will see it. That doesn't matter in a big state; it does here. For the sake of our beloved home and our way of life I advocate closing the thread and deleting it entirely.

I wouldnt worry about that. Every state in the union has the same problem, some much worse.

I completely disagree with this. Selling people on "puppies and rainbows" does everyone who reads this forum and who is interested in moving to ANY state a disservice. It's not a nice story but there are stories like this all over the country. Wyoming is a wonderful state for those who love freedom, wide open spaces, quiet and beauty. It contains many wonderful people and many wonderful options. But hiding the dark side of any state, in fact censoring the "dirt" out of a state on this message board, is less than honest. And I don't see that ever being a good thing.
