I've lived in Wyoming all my life. Moved from Gillette to Powell in '94 to go to Northwest College Northwest College :: Powell, Wyoming and it was a huge culture shock. I loved the college and the instructors. There's so much one-on-one attention that it was a great place to go to college. I got a degree in graphic art and graphic design there and still keep in touch with a few of my instructors.

After college I couldn't wait to leave powell because I thought there was no job opportunity but found a job right away - was employed for 8 years in Powell and Cody before switching to working freelance which lends well to this part of the country since everything is so small town and few and far between. Right after graduation I met my husband... and that helped me warm up to the town too.

I've found the people in powell to be extremely friendly and helpful. It amazes me everytime there's a small or large tragedy in powell, how the community comes together. I've lived here for 13 years now and I'm still struck by that.

Cody is only 25 miles away (shopping- wal-mart, sierra trading post, bookstores, giftshops, kmart, etc). Billings, MT is about 1.5 hours away and has lots of great shopping (mall, home depot, targets, wal-marts, jcpenny, etc.) It's nice to be able to have the quality of living here and still make a fun day trip to billings to go shopping.

We even have a grocery store that's open 24 hours now (not when I moved here). Some places close down early... like restaurants which can get frustrating. All in all. I really love living here. We have a great house, great neighbors and lots of quiet.

Here's what I don't like:

The wind... god bless that wind. We live a few miles North of Powell. Sometimes I have what I call "little house on the prairie" moments. We're replacing our roof this spring because of wind damage... speaking of the wind. You have to secure everything down. Everything. The BBQ grill, tables, chairs, dumpsters, cats... ha. okay, not the cats. We've had quite a few sleepless nights when it's blowing right on our bedroom windows. I don't believe the people who live in town have these same issues as the houses and trees break up those stong gusts.

The cold. Granted, it's nice to stay in, but if you have to go out it's bad sometimes. It's been -40 a few times since I've lived here and I don't believe that was factoring windchill in.... ahhh. the windchill. It feels so nice when you breath in and your nostrils stick together. I love that... yeah, right. However... my mom lives in Gillette and my cousin in Sheridan and we consistently have less snow than they do.

The money. If you're looking to get rich, you might look elsewhere... possibly not in Wyoming... ha... just my two cents.

10-4 missee! Ya hit it on the nose and you have a great attitude! Life is what you make of it! If you expect everything to be handed to you and everything to be just rosey all the time-you don't live in my world! I have been through powell many times and people waved an said howdy! great little college which I was very impressed with-very clean town-senic and lots of places to go for a day! Great history! Thanks for stikkin up for powell. Even though anyone who has lived there for more than a year would do without hesitation!

Hey wyoman, thanks! I feel it's important to have to have a sense of humor when leaning into the wind.

Really though, I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love wyoming. We're going to Yellowstone on May 2 (our anniversary) so I'm so excited. I really like going early when the traffic is light and the wildlife's still a little mangy.

Have a good one! lindsyj

I may be a little prejudice but I absolutley love Powell, Cody, and surrounding areas. I was born there and most of my extended family still live there. I haven't officially lived there in well over 20 years but I always look forward to getting to spend time up there. If it's riding at the peaks for a day, or fishing at Buffalo Bill and staying at the lake house. Or if its Fourth of July Week you got all the entertainment in Cody and you have to love the Irma. Scenic rides on the motorcycle like "Oh My God" highway or Chief Joseph highway. Powell is a place where I can still see myself enidng up in life.

My daughter and her husband went to college in Powell and absolutely loved it there. They moved to Laramie to finish school this school year and really miss Powell and the people there. They say they like Laramie, but not near as much as Powell. My sister went to school there in the 60's and my niece in the late 80's and both loved it then, too. One thing about it, it hasn't changed much over time, with the exception of it now having things like McDonald's that it didn't have years ago!

PsykoKustomz you just mentioned all the reasons why I just adore this area. Born and raised in Iowa I found it by 'accident' when I rode my bike over the Oh My God highway (that's funny because its true). I have visited the area 7 times since June (I think I might be addicted) moving there next month But, hey, down there where you are is nothing to sneeze at either, I stayed there on one of my trips last summer and met a lot of really nice people.

Yeah its nice where I live now I have a lot of scenery all around me to say the least. I'm glad its getting warmer so I can put some more miles on the bike this year. I'm addicted to Powell area as well. I just helped my uncle and grandpa get their boats going so many weekends up at the lake will be coming. If I could only find a job up there and make what I do now I would be there in a heartbeat
