ilmd is on a distinguished road
Powell is better for real estate- you will payquite a bit more for a 'lesser' house in Cody- I know- when I moved here I worked at the hospital in Cody, so looked at real estate there. I ended up with a much better deal in Powell. Now that I have been here awhile, I really do not enjoy Cody- it is too touristy- too crowded in the spring, summer, fall due to the tourists. The traffic is unbelievable for such a small town at these times! You have more stores in Cody, but not stores that the everyday person shops in- they are mostly tourest, except WalMart and K-Mart. Now, if there is something I want from WalMart I order it online- then I don't have to go through the huge store. You wouldn't buy clothes there anymore- I used to buy basic clothes there- underwear, jeans... but the last 2 years the WalMart clothing quality has gone WAY downhill- very cheap/flimsy. I just order online, or order from JC Penney/Sears/LandsEnd/-better quality.
Neither place has much as far as restaurants go.

I moved from Evanston, WY to Cody a bit over a year ago, and I've found it to be an almost perfect place to live. I live west of the city on the North Fork where property is more expensive, but, I believe, has far more potential for appreciation, and far more beauty to enjoy while waiting for that appreciation.

It's important to note that people who live in Powell often commute to Cody, but not the other way. Cody, not Powell, has the Super Walmart. Cody, not Powell, has the Buffal Bill Historical Center. People have heard of Cody in Europe. If really bad times come, wealthy people will arrive in larger numbers than now, not only raising property values, but also bringing a wider variety of amenities. The Powell area, because of all the irrigation, has a very high water table and the subsequent problems with mold.

Before I moved here I drove through Powell; it seemed to be a pleasant place. But other than a library sale and a museum trip, I've never had any reason to visit. If, on the other hand, I lived in the Powell area, it would be necessary to visit Cody even for grocery shopping.

Powell is a nice place; Cody is one of the best places in the world to live.
