jgussler:
I included those two simply because, to me, they focused on actual areas of population/activity mosttimes rather then fairly quiet roads/highways.

I just posted and it didn't show up. hahahaha
I check the web cams often and I travel often. But they don't mean a lot. I just jump on the boulevard and hammer down. Some times, I probably shouldn't. But I do.

Here's a website that offers views of some other webcams in Wyoming that aren't State Highway (WYDOT) cameras. Those are listed there, too, but the links are old and no longer work.
Wyoming Weather Cams, north dakota, colorado, montana, south dakota, weather forecasts, weather instruments, wind, snow, mountains, pictures, cameras

First off, I should mention that for years I made my living running up and down the road. "NOT" the interstate. State highways, county highways, county roads, two tracks, and some times I made the two tracks.
My son-in-law lives here and works 32 miles away. He watches the web cams and says "Oh, I can't go to work today." I just laugh and say get in the truck, I'll take you.
Hell, they shut down the Interstate and I just take the old road. They don't even plow the old road.
I've traveled through Shirley and I had to have my brother walk in front of my pickup to show me where the road was. 15 minutes and we'd switch and I'd walk and he'd follow. But we made it to where we were going.
Today, 3 snow flakes hit the highway and nobody will travel.

My husband had to do that when we lived out on Pumpkin Vine south of Laramie. He was walking in front of a sheriff's truck to get to me(I hit a drift trying to get to the highway), that blankety blank wanted to leave me out there and go back to town!!! That's when I knew I had a good man, there was no way he was leaving me out there.

That road thru the Shirley Basin is definately isolated. When I lived in WY I outfitted my vehicle with supplies as I didn't want to be one of those folks who go off the road in blizzard and get stuck and die due to exposure. When I drove hwy 59 from Gillette it seemed like a smart thing to do. Things like an old but warm sleeping bag, clothes and even a deck of cars to pass the time waiting and not leaving the vehicle.
Like most Wyomingites I do have a few good stories about getting stuck in horrid weather. The best was when my engine seized up on my way to work in Jackson from Hoback Junction, very early in the morning and the gal on the local radio station just announced that it was -58F air temp. It was circa 1989.

The cold and the snow never bothered me. Chain up, keep moving. The thing that bothered me was a "White out". Wind picks up and you can't see 10 feet in front of the vehicle and you are screwed.
Hell, I've got out and shoveled so I could get through drifts. I've got a tarp over the grill so my engine will hold heat. But when you can't see, your done.
Your right. The trip from the Bow to Casper is a long way with no help. It's only for the brave at heart. haha
