There used to be a saying going around Wyoming in the late 70's and early 80's. "Wyoming is, what America was". I hope that never goes to something like. "Wyoming, just like the rest of America". That would really be the worst thing that could happen to a great state.

Elkhunter, Thanks for your reply, Very helpful. Can you recomend anybody with real estate to talk too? Also what are not real big homes going for? And rent? Is the homes on top of each other or do they have some property for horses too? What is the cost of living like? Is there any nice churches around? Are the stores far away? How long have you and your daughters lived there? What all is there for kids? Riding ? That sounds exciting about the ranches and stuff for my daughter. Are people friendly? What would you recomend find a job first then try to find a place to rent till we get started? Thanks again for all your help, and I promise to shh shh

Homes here in Sheridan run from $130k to well into the millions. There's a new subdivision that opened and those houses start at around $400k.

Can't tell you much about the churches.

Shoping is typical. We're big enough to have a Super Wal-Mart and a Home depot. Plus we got the typical mom and pop stores. Down town is special in that it's 1900 or late 1800's and it's always stayed that way.

We have excellent schools and outstanding teachers.

We have a hospital that does a great job, but if it's something serious that they can't handle, they send you up to Billings that is one of the top medical facilities in the Nation.

There's a lot for kids to do if they want to. The typical problem is, if you give a kid too many toys, he doesn't get very inventive.

Renting a place is hard to do. Actually, hard to find.

As far as jobs go, here's a website for out Job Services. It lists all the jobs in Wyoming complete with discriptions, pay, vacation, all the info on the job.

Default Elkhunter,

Thank you again Sorry to keep bugging. Just now found your reply trying to get use to using this. How long have you lived in Wyoming? I have read several post some are saying summers are only 2 mos. and winters are very long? Does that get depressing or isn't this true. Is Sheridan the best place to look, the 130k sounds good for us not the millions. My daughter has been looking at pictures of Wyoming is it as beautiful has the pictures? Are all the homes with views of the mountains? My daughter found where they have rodeos bull riding horses ect at Cheyene frontier days? Are you famuliar with this? I thank you for your help on the hospitals and good clean fun for kids, I homeschool our daughter schools aren't so good here. What all is there for kids to do? Is there a area you recommend and recommend to stay away from. Is there snow there now? Thanks for the job website also Have a great Christmas to you and your family.

I've been in Wyoming off and on since 1972.

Summers? I bought tomato plants this spring, just after the last frost. Very few of them turned red. I canned most of them green.

Frontier days has been a long standing tradition in Wyoming. Kinda seems like it's a stepping stone to the National Finals.

Snow here? Now? You betcha. Every where you look it's so white. Not much, about 4 inches on the ground. Supposed to get some more this weekend. I can't wait.

Not many homeschool here. The schools are outstanding. We have teachers that care, regardless of pay. In a lot of places, they say the education is down because of teachers pay. Here, they do their job and are rightfully proud of what they do. In my eyes, teachers never make what they turn out the door.

This used to be true in Laramie, but lately their summers have been longer. Sheridan has many days in the summer up over 100 degrees and it lasts a while, according to friends of ours that live there. It really depends on where you live in Wyoming, the weather is very different everywhere.

Default Concerning Homeschooling...

Just thought I would interject. The schools I have heard are excellent in Sheridan.

Just thought I would let you know though, if you want to continue homeschooling there is a pretty good size group of people who homeschool in Sheridan. There is actually a group that meets at Calvary Baptist church, I forget the name but I can get it for your if you would like. I plan on joining it sometime soon.

Me personally I have chosen to home school, not because of the schools being "bad" persay, just because of personal preference and our spiritual beliefs that we would like to teach in addition to schooling, hand in hand.

There is a big homeschool convention held in Douglas, Wy every year. I got invited to go this past year, but didn't get to go. I hope to in 2008.

This homeschool group is a resource for moms and their children, there are field trips, sports and activities that help all the homeschooled children have the chance to get together and interact and socialize.

There is a good YMCA here with all kinds of activities for kids.

There is a great Library with lots of kid's storytimes for all ages and other activities from time to time.

Feel free to pm me if you would like more info on Homeschooling in Sheridan and I will do my best to find what I can.

Also, Elkhunter is right, the schools are pretty good. My neighbor homeschooled most of her children thru highschool, however her youngest that is still at home, this year she allowed her to go to Tongue River High school, which is a smaller country school outside of Sheridan, closer to Dayton/Soldier Creek RD. area. And I know she wouldn't let her daughter go if it wasn't a good one because she shares some of the same spiritual values that my husband and I do.

Best of luck to you on your move... Feel free to PM me any time if you would like.

Excellent!!!!! I always put my kids through normal school. Always wondered about home schooling them and didn't know who/what/where to go. Thank you so much for the insight.

I always liked the schools here, but not everybody will. And I understand that. Matter of fact, I appreciate that. My kids did well, but not all will do what mine did.

Again, Kristy, thank you so much for your input.

You're very welcome

I went through public school all through my school years, my hubby was home schooled all through his school years.
I came out pretty normal, or at least I hope so LOL
I am still learning about what is in town, but I hope to learn a lot from the convention in Douglas about what is available in Wy...

I think I come out normal. Well, last I checked I did. But what is normal?

I always thought about home schooling. Thought it was a good option. But I didn't do it, here. Here, I thought the teachers did a good enough job that I didn't need to intevene, Know what I mean?
