Ok this might seem like a strange thread, but I am very curious to know what the story is about something I saw driving across Wyoming.

On Hwy 26 westbound towards Riverton. I have seen some sort of town (or compound) just right off the highway. It has to be about 20-30 miles east from Shoshone. It seems to have a dozen well-maintained buildings enclosed by a fence with barbed wire at the top. There is a rebel (of CSA flag) raised in the middle of the town (or compound). It looks like a compound.

Just seemed strange to me. Of course I don't think it would be wise to ask them, but figured someone on here would know. Anything might be helpful.

If that's the place I'm thinking of, I was told that it's an "artist" home.

IIRC, he was written up in the Casper paper some years ago, settled in the area so he could have some land and a place to stretch out to do his creative work. They made him out to be quite the character .... but nothing that would stand out in a lot of little artist colony towns around the USA.

Anyway, that's the story that I recall about the place and there was nothing sinister about it at all, more of just a spoof level activity.

FWIW, there's several other places along that corridor that are artist's homes/studios. IIRC, there's another fellow down the road who specialized in hand thrown pottery ... although the place looks pretty shabby and they don't seem to hang out the "open" sign very frequently, at least not in all my trips past there.
