Fort Laramie attracts me; how about you? (Cheyenne, Torrington: sales, for rent)

I visited Fort Laramie, both the town and the park site, and found it very small, out of the way, quiet, nostalgic...in a word, charming. I've clicked on every search I could find about it, and it still seems alluring to me, probably because I'm from a small burg myself, in Pennsylvania. I am retiring, and thought this small Wyoming town (population 245 and one hard case, the sign reads, or something like that), and I'd like to correspond with someone whom lives there for more intimate data. My first question of importance, of course, is health care services. I'm a wartime veteran, so I would like to know where the nearest Veterans Administration outpatient clinic and hospital is. Can anyone fill me in here?

I am a war time vet. I served in Viet Nam. I served in Lybia, I Served in Iran. Got to lot of places. I even severed in desert storm.

You sure know how to pick small Wyo towns. Ft Laramie is indeed very nice and very small. If you didn't eat at the Ft Laramie American Grill you missed a great meal, and also a great source of local info. The owner/chef is a New England native, but he seemed to know everything that's going on in the community, probably because the locals gather there for their daily coffee. If I remember right he said there were some new homes being built, but I don't remember the price.

The VA regional hospital is in Cheyenne about 120 miles away but I think there's a clinic in Scotts Bluff NE, about 60 miles to the east. FE Warren AFB ls in Cheyenne for BX and Commissary. The NG at nearby Camp Guernsey is expanding but I don't know what, if any vets' support might be available there.

Torrington (pop 5800) is the county seat, and is about 20 miles to the east.

No idea about the cost of living. I just saw a 2BR/1 Bath house posted for rent at 450/mo but I don't know if that's typical. Wyo has no state income tax, and no sales tax on food.

Hey, Elkhunter, thanks for the reply, you've given me my first leads. I only stayed a day in Ft. Laramie last May, and have been thinking of little else. And a thanks back to you for your service. I did army in early 60's, during Viet Nam War, served in Germany at the ammo dumps in Dahn, other posts in Pirmasens, Baumholder, Kaiserslautern at various duties, ended up a Spec 4 inspecting and upgrading unit armories preparing to go over to Nam. My last post was with 50th Ord Co, 84th Ord Bat., 5lst Ord Grp, 7th Army, all of which went over just after I rotated back to states. My second hitch was in l980's, when army asked me to come back and do arms & tactical training coordination at Ft. Indiantown Gap, in Penna., where I now live. I forget which war was going on then, but it wasn't declared a war until several years later, after my hitch was up. I got medals for both conflicts, yet I never saw a shot fired beyond the qualifying range. I'm a great military history enthusiast, and gun collector/trader. I have an agenda in mind for Ft. Laramie as a hobby-horse project for my retirement years, which I am sure will contribute to the area in tourism. What I need is confidential advice and help in making contacts to make this thing happen. I sort of have the Midas touch in business, and have been successful at several popular and lucrative career moves, some of which are still operative and productive today. I'd like to transplant some of these ideas and consolidate them into one entrepreneurial production as the sort of last fling and culmination of my working career. It will make money, but more importantly, it will be fun and a chance to share it all with Wyoming, which, from all I've seen so far, really needs this. You seem like a nice enough fella, so I'd like to correspond with you privately and make a friend, as a friend. Money is not a problem, my credit has taken me far, and I have my own savings besides, but it is immoral to use one's own money in such enterprises without ending up a miser. I've always taken on the banking and credit communities as my partners, and they have always rightly trusted me in the past, to their enrichment. However, I also like to have other partners involved. I like to employ locals, and sort of keep the money "in the family", so to speak. Being a computer dummie myself, I hire other people to work them for me, so forgive me if I don't know how to exchange real names & addresses through the forum. I want to give you mine, and I want to get yours. How do we do that?

My husband liked to pheasant hunt in that area when we lived on that side of the state, good amount of birds there.

Recently, a good friend moved out of Fort Laramie. He's getting old and needs to be closer to care.

He loved it there. But he and his wife were retired and on a fixed income but they could rake out a good living in FL. I have relation in Wheatland, Torrington, Guernsey, so have been there several times. Never lived there. But always stopped and said hey. Seemed like a nice, quaint little town.

Your outlook on western Wyoming seems dim. I'm considering relocating major business interests (and residence) to Ft. Laramie area, just because it's so historically nostalgic and downright charming. Do you miss eastern Wyoming that much? Or what...? Fortsite

A couple of years ago, they introduced Pheasants into this area. It's nuts now. We have a season, great hunting, birds everywhere.

But yeah, I've hunted in Wheatland, Torrengton areas and the hunting was good. The Ft is right there.
