I'm in Ohio and my fiance is in DC. We're trying to determine where to live when we get married. On a whim I thought "What about Wyoming?" From what I see and hear, it's got beautiful mountains, forests, dry, wild weather, lots of nature and still feels like the "real" west where places like Colorado are becoming increasingly liberal and urbanized.
I know that Wyoming is VERY sparsely populated-the entire state has fewer people that my county in Ohio, Summit County. I work in finance, in mortgages currently, and my fiance has a similar field but would likely stay at home when we have a family. If we did it we'd probably stay in Casper or Cheyenne areas since they are the larger cities and I'm not up for becoming a rancher! Would I have a decent job market to choose from in my field in those areas? Are they really as isolated from the rest of America as they appear to be? What about air travel? If we want to fly home, can you get a decent flight out of either city's airport or do you have to drive all the way down to Denver? What's the weather like overall?? |

Dear Ohio,
Moving to Wyoming on a whim, eh? I was born and raised in Wyoming, so I’ll try to answer your questions for you. Yes WY is sparsely populated but, I don’t think a person fully understand that unless you have lived in a sparsely populated area before. However, population is not as important as dealing with the extreme climate conditions. Both Cheyenne and Casper ranked in the top 5 for windiest cities in America. For your question about finance jobs, because of the current oil boom again, there is growth in this area and it is a good possibility you should be successful as a Mortgage lender in either city. As for local Companies Hiring for your position I would recommend contacting the local Chamber in each city. Cheyenne is not isolated. You have two major interstates, (I-25,I-80) that intersect there and you are only one and a half hours by drive from Denver. Casper is also located on an interstate, (I-25). There is also an international airport there. However, direct flights to Casper don’t exist and a hop to/from Casper will double your air fare. I hope this info was useful. Please post and let me how it works out for you. Toby Moderator cut: ad Last edited by Yac; 10-31-2006 at 02:11 PM. Reason: sig removed |
