As you probably know... boarding a horse is quite expensive and the riding is often very limited, and troublesome to 'Go There' everyday. I like having a place adjacent to National Forest / open land.

Consider finding a ranch job where you can ride at will. THAT will limit your options, but you can usually make do socially. For meeting the BEST (keeper) friends, I suggest a small town.

I agree that Billings or Bozeman (or Missoula) would be a great choice for typical large scale social benefit. Sheridan and Cody would be my choices in WY (Tho as a youth I liked the dances at Kaycee, WY... small town).

Consider also looking at Spearfish and Sturgis, SD

Sheridan may have a 'bump' in registered offenders due to VA hospital presence, but I would not worry about it for a minute. You can be wise and very safe in WY. As mentioned, level of offender can be very minimal and not a threat. (Granted, there are also the wackos / sick (plenty in PNW!!! as you know)) In WY, they cannot hide behind a 300' tall tree

Make sure you make reservations ahead of time for the 2015 Wyo Rodeo. The rates will go up and you'll have a heard time finding rooms of your choice. Enjoy your trip, and the rodio.

Between the Mint, the Wyo Theater, and the Occidental Saloon in friendly nearby Buffalo (shameless plug), you have, essentially, the center of the Youth Culture in Wyoming, if not the entire United States...

Where I live, which is supposed to be fairly safe, the ratio is 35 to 1. I think the ratio is just under city-data's crime stats table; check a few different cities and you'll probably see that Sheridan is pretty normal for its size.

Thank you!

There are 5 levels of sex offenders. The first two, were not even reported on the list because they were 'Urinating in public' type charges and a court panel deemed them not a threat to the public. They did not have the same requirements as the rest, I.e. they could live next to the school, etc... About 7 years ago, our state legislatures passed a law that ALL sex offenders had to be on the list made public. Most on the list were in that category. Of the rest, only 2 or 3 were serious offenders. Those 2 or 3, have livedb in Sheridan for many years and are now in their 60's. All of those years in Sheridan, they never committed a crime again. Some of the others were date rape type thing where it was consentual but they got caught in the back seat so somebody has to be charged and because one was a minor, their testimony didn't count.

You do not have to worry about sex crimes in Sheridan. I raised 4 daughters in Sheridan and never worried about them.
