Fishing in Wyoming
I would like to do more/learn more about fishing once I get settled in Wyoming. My husband and I enjoy camping and seeing new sights. Where are some places you would suggest?
Wyoman stated in another thread to not eat the fish below hot springs - what does this mean? Are there areas where we should not eat what we catch?

You didn't say where you might be doing this. This is not a easy question to answer, and I could be out of the Keep it Secret Club for this. So I will add a few places to fish I really enjoyed. The little Diversion Dam southeast of Ralston,Wyo. is great in october for German Brown Trout. Fish off the dam and be ready, most of the fish will be to frozen to release by the time you get them up to you from the water. Due to wind and winter. So it could be a short trip. The upper Sunshine lake above Meeteetsee, Wyo. Is a good spot for Splake. Especially in the winter. You could set a state record out of there with them. Good panfishing near the sides of the Grayrocks Resivior, north of Wheatland,Wyo. The Dam at Boysen Resivior is a good spot for Lingcod,Trout. Another is the Platte river anywhere you can get into from Rawlings up to the Colorado/Wyoming state line. I liked the Tongue River north of Sheridan,Wyo. For trout. I liked the Soda Lake area norhth of Pinedale,Wyo. For the Lake Trout. Catfishing just below the power plant east of Glenrock,Wyoming is great for the big ones, take alot of one ounce weights and heavy line. The beaver ponds on the top of South Pass are great for fly fishing. Bull Lake on the wind river reservation is great for Lingcod and lake trout. There is good Bass Fishing at Lake Camuwaite(?), west of Boysen Resivior. Directly north of Jeffries City,Wyo. is a couple small creeks that have good Brook Trout fishing, not big ones, but good eating. The Wind River east of Duboise is great for trout in the fall during big game season is best. Of course Miracle Mile between Pathfinder and Seminole dams is great. If you can keep the "Greenies" out of the way when you catch a good one. Firehole is great, southeast of Rockspring,Wyo. for lake trout. Best with a boat and can catch record breakers there also. Muskie is good fishing in Keyhole resevior east of Sheridan,Buffalo area. Moon Lake west of Duboise, Wyo. Is good for a summer weekend. Lake Louise south of Lander,Wyoming is good for trout. Also put on a backpack and hike to some good spots for Dolley Varden Trout in the many lakes northeast of there. There are many small lakes on public land that have been stocked by the Wyoming Game and Fish. And sometimes is a very well kept secret by the locals. You should be able to find out about them from the local warden or office. I especially liked to grapple for the Crawdads at the dam at Glendo Resivior. I makes a good end to a summer day. Watch out, they are fast. Once I caught one of the landlocked Salmon in the Green River above the town of Green River,Wyo. I tasted real good. But I never had a chance to go again, just for them. If your there at night. Go slowly along the roads and watch the multitudes of "kangaroo rats". Hopping along in the headlights. It looks really cool. There really mice of some kind, but it's a sight you might never get to see again.
If you know a spot your going to. Get one of those "Sportmans" maps. And in it, you will see the lakes stream rivers and get a good idea of the fish that inhabit them. A good rule of thumb. Or my thumb anyway. Get a small tacklebox and one or two of them telescoping fishing poles. And keep them in the vehicle. I ran into alot of areas that had fish in them. I could find a worm or grasshopper somewhere with my collapseable shovel. Which is always under the tacklebox. It was a good way to spend a few hours to get the cobwebs out and forget the tasks I should have been attending to at the time. I hope I didn't ruin a few spots for anyone.
Want to know a secret? These arent't even my good spots! But it should keep you busy. I lived here and enjoyed it at every opportunity.

Thanks for the info Shadowwalker - I hope you don't get tossed out of the club!! I have seen a few fishing poles advertised that were broke down into a small compact size and thought something like that would be good to get. During one of our little driving trips last summer we saw a place called "The Miracle Mile" (I think that is right). I couldn't believe you had to throw back fish under something like 19 inches! I have been wanting to see just how big a fish I could catch.
Landlocked Salmon - now that is interesting. My nephew in Washington state has sent me wild Salmon he caught - what a treat. I never thought about Salmon as far inland as Wyoming.
Mostly I imagine we will fish in southern Wyoming. I can so relate to your statement about spending some time fishing to forget tasks you should be attending to at the time. The few times I have gone fishing I have found the experience very enjoyable - even not catching anything!!

O.K. southern wyo. Little firehole has camping and good bank fishing. You can also try Upper Green River Lake. Used to be good fishing along the stream east of Pinedale. Big Sandy Resivior outside of Farson,Wyo. is a good one. A Very long time ago, say almost 30 years. I could fish at Fourteen Mile Resivior north of Rocksprings. And get good panfish. The beaver ponds and streams at Burnt Fork area south of Evanston are a good bet too.
I used to have alittle Hibatchi and powderded seasonings with me. I'd just fish, and cook them on the tailgate. Enjoy fresh cooked fish meal. And go on to where I was going. I did that on company time for almost 20 years.
We also could take along a gun or two way back when and get game. No one had a problem with it. Everybody did it. I don't know how it is accepted now. I still did it some in the late 1990's. I showed/looked at alot of game in the back of a company truck. Just what we did then, no big deal.

It's (307) 735-4216. It's also known as Hall's Glendo Marina, as Gatorhunter mentioned. One other place you might want to try is the "Just Add Water" boat rentals at (307) 735-2032.
I hope that helps.
