Our names are Mike and Patti. We live in Chester,SC, and we're moving to Gillette in the spring of 2007. We are looking for decent people,a decent town, and decent jobs. We're over-the-road drivers, but we're just plain ol' tired of the BS that goes with our job. Gillette has always appealed to us,so we did some snooping, and we've decided to come and live with you.We are honest,friendly,hard-working people, and we're looking for good friends,a nice home(maybe with a little land),good jobs, and a good life, because we're going to put down our roots and STAY. We're older people(him-51,her-44),so we aren't interested in a "Party Town" type of thing. We don't have any children,we don't use drugs, and we only drink on rare occasions. We know the meaning of courtesy, manners, respect, and responsiblity, and we do not have any stupid "Big City Ideas". We're looking for temporary housing until we can become familiar with Gillette, get established on our jobs(we'll be going to work when we arrive),get a few paychecks under our belts, and find our permanent home. We have a fully furnished 3 bdrm home here in SC, but we want to find our permanent home before we pack up ALL of our junk and move it, because we're only going to do it ONCE! We're willing to look at a (furnished) small house,a mobile home,an apartment,or even a large camper. We can bring our own dishes, cooking utensils, towels, bedding, some small appliances, and a TV. We do have 2 medium-sized dogs that we can not leave behind, because we have nobody to care for them. One is a 3 yr. old Border Collie/Jack Russell mix(Sable-female-24 lbs),the other is a 1 yr.old Keeshond(Smokey-male-35 lbs). They are house-broken,well-trained,all shots,spayed/neutered,friendly, and very clean. They ride with us in the truck, so we have to keep them clean, free of fleas/ticks, have current shots, and we can't allow them to tear things up,because our boss would have a fit(we have permission to take them with us).We will take full responsibility for them, and we're willing to pay a reasonable deposit for them.Smokey is smart, playful, and loves children, but he can get a little rowdy when he's excited. Sable is kind of shy,and prefers older kids and adults, but she is also smart and playful. We will keep your property clean(home AND yard),report any serious problems promptly, and PAY OUR RENT. We won't bug you over small things -like a broken light bulb-we'll take care of it ourselves. We'll be friendly to any neighbors, and nobody will have to call the police because of us. We are planning to rent for 1-2 years, so you will have good tenants. If you have a place you would be willing to rent to us, please leave us a message on this forum, and we can make arrangements to contact you. Any advice, information, or just a friendly "Hi,Goofy!!" would be most welcome also. We're looking forward to hearing from you all!
I recently moved to Gillette, wy about 10 months ago. Prices for the lowest quality housing you can think of is through the roof! 2,000 1,500 a month for a run down trailer house. Seriously, me and my family were almost stuck living in the parking lot of the place I worked at (NPT) North Park Transportation. Highway robbery around there to say the least. Let's put it this way, my family (Me and wife and 3 kids kids) stayed in the worst motel in Gillette , Arrowhead Motel, paid $550.00 per week for a one room efficiency and was forced out because summer was coming and the owner could charge $100.00 more for tourists. The people drive like back where I came from, New Jersey. They are rude and selfish. You WILL NOT find what your looking for in personality types as portrayed in any magazine or online resource. You can find a good paying job here, yeah. But, with what people charge you around here you'll still wind up broke. Oh yeah, just in case you haven't found this out yet, there are a lot of Meth addicts out here (similar to the "crack-heads" of the East Coast). Don't let these people bullcrap you they want your money. THAT'S IT!
One more thing, TREES?! forget about 'em they don't have any out here unless they try to make the downtown look good...again for tourism, and I guess because when people go to work around there they can feel that the "dog eat dog" approach to the housing situation (which has existed since the 70's when the citizens lived in tents) is still the right approach. It's a dusty nasty ignorant place to live. Don't make the mistake I did, when you drive down the road and see an exit for Gillette keep right on going. It took me a while to get back on my feet (working in the coal mines now) but I'm now renting in Wright, Wy for 750.00 a month plus utilities in a Fema trailer (town was detroyed last year by a tornado). Wish you the best of luck because i STILL need it.
I swore to myself that I'd NEVER forget how me and my family was treated there. Some of the towns citizens have no clue how bad it's gotten.

Wow, finally a posting (above) that accurately reflects the realities of coming to Wyoming on a wage-based income for a family.
Thanks, KRONUS, for your candor about the situation in the area.
I don't believe that people set out to make your life so difficult, but the economics of the area are harsh. I'd bet that most of the folks who treated you badly have not been in Wyoming for too long, or will stay around when the economic cycle softens. But, they're there now.
The really rude drivers? We've got one in our area, and he sticks out like a sore thumb. Can't wait until the AF gives him a new posting out of the area; a couple of more run-ins with the local nice folks and complaints to his CO and I'll wager he'll be moving on sooner than he thinks.
True, also ... again, for those of you seeking to relocate from a wetter climate zone where you take water for granted ... is that, with the wind, soil, and limited water here, trees are not part of the landscape except along low lying areas that have a source of moisture. You will not see dense hardwood forests, even in Western WY where they have more water than the Eastern plains. You will not see a lot of green spaces, except in a snow-melt area in the spring. This area is mostly a brown desert.
Normal humidity levels are so low that the wind dries out everything. Thick underbrush in the forests is a rarity. We ride our horses on bare ground through wilderness trees in forests that have been untouched for hundreds of years. There's not a lot of deciduous trees dropping leaves and building up a rich topsoil layer with a carpet of leaves; we've got mostly pines and firs in the woods with a few isolated stands of Aspen (Quaking Asp).
I'm told that they hunt deer in the NE USA with shotguns because the forests are so dense you can't get a safe shot through the woods. Here in Wyoming, a medium power rifle is more appropriate ... you'll get clear shots in the 100-200 yards range, even longer if you've got the right rifle and are a confident shooter.
I just can't overemphasize how harsh Wyoming climate, soil, water, and economics are. Be prepared for a whole new living experience if these things are stuff you've taken for granted back home.

As a single guy who has seen some of the difficulties of my friends with families, I would agree with this.
The catch-as-catch-can adapability that is often required is difficult to accomplish with family responsibilities to consider.
I am considering purchasing a pre-construction home in the RC Ranch subdivision. Can anybody tell me about this subdivision?
It is new and currently in the "dirt work stage", I believe. From what I can find online it looks like the original zoning is commercial. This is an excerpt from the City Council meeting minutes dated 2/5/07. "An Ordinance to Amend the District Zoning Map of the City of Gillette, Wyoming, for Property Generally Located at 4300 Running W Drive and Legally Described as Lot 34, Block 2, RC Ranch Subdivision, Phase I Be Rezoned From C-1, General Commercial Zoning District to R-4, Multi-Family Residential Zoning District."
Check it out @ Google Earth. Look for 4-J Road, scroll around the area to see the current patches of dirt. I searched for Running W Drive (as listed in the minutes) and could not find it, I am pretty sure it is still dirt as well. There is lots of constuction on either side of 4-J Road, but still far from framing houses. Additional info on the project can be found Moderator cut: local real estate copmany website
hapipupi3, well can you believe it?? I live in Washington but "home" is Chester, SC. Chester has been having a terrible time, hasn't it? I get the local paper and "hear" things from my family, but it is really rough there right now.
For those of you who don't know, Chester was what we in the South call a "mill town," but the mills are all gone now. The town council has been (so I understand) trying to attract new industry, but it's pretty dismal there now. My husband and I were there over Christmas this year, and it was pretty depressing. I sure hope they are able to straighten things out and get some businesses, which of course will attract new people.
Now, on to other things....my husband is a retired Seattle firefighter, a real sweet guy (but don't tell him I told you!). :-) We have been trying to find a good fit for us so he can retire (really retire!), so have been looking at different places. His family is in Washington State; mine is in South Carolina. He hates the heat in SC; I hate the rain in Washington. We're trying to find that perfect spot for us. Wyoming is on our list of places to look at. I work at home (I'm a certified medical transcriptionist), so I can get work anywhere. If we can find reasonably priced housing, hubby could retire. Wyoming housing prices do look quite a bit better than Washington State.
We do like trees and friendly folk. Any of y'all have an idea where in Wyoming we should be looking? I'd sure appreciate some words of wisdom, places to look.......
The Bitterroot Valley, generally speaking.
Most of those I work with and talk to around Gillette/Wright Wyoming speak highly of moving to the Missoula, MT area (Gods' Country as they put it).
I know it's not Wyoming, but, it's worth checking into.
I think someone recommended Stevensville, MT. Somewhat south of Missoula, MT.

Hi there,
I live in Upton, which is about 50 miles Southeast of Gillette. as you can see from others' posts, Gillette ain't as good as it seems. I grew up here in Upton, and spent all my life here (except for the last 9 years i spent in the navy). I got out of the navy a little over a year ago, and have been workin at a coal mine south of here for a little over 6 months. what i wanted to let you know tho, the trailer i currently live in now will be up for sale within a month, i'm buying a house here in town, and i have no plans to move this trailer. it's sittin on a rented lot (reasonably priced and decent lot size, and it's fenced too) and the trailer will go for a reasonable price. i have 2 dogs myself, a pair of bassett mixes (Baby 8yrs old, 45 lbs) and Boomer (a year old around 30 lbs). if you might be interested, shoot me an email, and i'll give ya more particulars. As for truckin jobs around, BTI trucking in Moorcroft is lookin for drivers, and i know Dixon Bros. Trucking in Newcastle has been doin some advertising for drivers as of late.
